Plex + Synology + IPTV?

Hey guys

Had a lightbulb moment and need help setting it up how I want it.

I have a DS920+, with an Nvidia Sheild TV Pro, going through a Denon receiver to my Sony TV.

I don’t use the Plex app on the Sony TV because it can’t handle TrueHD/Atmos Audio etc - someone on here suggested the Shield and it’s been amazing ever since.

Today, I realised I use a separate app (IPTV Smarters) for an IPTV sub I have. I thought “Wouldn’t it be great to simply have this on my Plex sidebar, and the guide come up, and I could pick a channel I wanted to watch?”

Well, after some initial Googling, it is possible. Someone suffered something called xTeve (pronounced Steve?) but I don’t know how I’d go about installing this on the Plex Media Server running on my DS920+.

Can someone tell me how to do this, if it is even possible?

I know people will suggest Kodi or Jellyfin etc, and while I accept I may not get full functionality on Plex, having it all in one place is my preference.

I believe Plex Pass is a prerequisite to this, so I have purchased this.

I have inserted my M3U link into M3U4U.com and I have absolutely zero idea how to proceed. I’ve followed the Wiki but clearly I must be missing something.

Would really love help getting this set up, one sub topic at a time.

Thanks!

From what I’ve understood, xTeVe simulates a “regular” TV Tuner which can be connected from Plex, feeding it the channels from whatever IPTV you’ve connected.

Inside Plex it’s just using the live tv / DVR features of Plex.

Yes, that’s my understanding - but there is some prep work outside of Plex to get an EPG etc to work. This involves something called Docker which xTeve runs on.

Sorry, I’m not aware how to set this app up. Maybe something on their project site?

It’s pronounced X-TV and it’s very easy to set up if you read the documentation.

If you have a specific question on running it after installation tag me.

Thanks. The documentation doesn’t include the Synology NAS instructions (that I can find). Here are some screenshots of what I’ve done so far.

When I search for “xteve”, I get many options. The documentation mentions the one highlighted (altursimo) but have I installed the correct one (highlighted)?

Upon installation, it gave me some options about usage etc. I didn’t change anything so I can get as far as I could, if I do need to go back and change anything, let me know.

Now it says it is running, but I can’t “launch” it and see a GUI. Is that what I’m supposed to see at this point or do I need to do something else?

Sorry for all the questions.

Looks like you’re running it inside a Docker container. You should be able to use the web browser to access it.

Thank you. You were right, I didn’t think it was as simple as putting it in my browser. I thought I would need to run the GUI within Docker.

Anyway, all sorted now except for two minor issues.

  1. My channel logos are not coming through. This is cosmetic and a lower priority, I need to research this further.

  2. Despite my IPTV provider having groups, and those same groups mapping over to xTeVe, I don’t see groups in Plex. They’re just dumped alphabetically.

Plex did have its own free IPTV channels segregated into groups, and I disabled them, but how can I use the groups from my EPG?

Not sure about the groups but as for the channel icons you can use guide2go with it’s supported EPG site and you’ll be all set. The guide data they provide includes beautiful icons.
