Plex transcoder crashes on Dolby Vision file

Server Version#: 1.25.9.5673
Player Version#: 9.1.0.31720

Whenever I or someone else tries to transcode a TV show that’s dolby vision (web-dl from D+ or P+) the transcoder crashes and is unable to play the file. I can direct play the file without issue. Movies with dolby vision/HDR combo don’t have this issue. Is the problem with my computer (I can play the file, but the colors are skewed) or is the problem with Plex Server? Based on the last line of the logs I found, it appears the color space isn’t supported.

My sever is running on Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS; Intel i7-9700K

Plex transcode log.log (18.4 KB)

Are you able to post the complete log zip from PMS, and provide a sample of the media that won’t transcode, please?

I don’t have a sample, do you know of a way to make one without losing any important information?

You can make a sample as shown here :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you!

That sample is Dolby Vision profile 5, so doesn’t have an HDR10 fallback option. It also uses a proprietary colour space, which we can’t properly process during transcoding. The transcoder shouldn’t crash, but I wouldn’t expect DV profile 5 to transcode well and retain colours.

Thank you. So basically I just need to use a different source, probably HDR, if I need to transcode.

Yes, if you need to transcode, I’d be using media with HDR10 or SDR
