Windows 10 x64
Xeon E5-2670 x2
nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Plex Media Server Version 1.14.1.5488
Situation: Taking a 4k movie (HEVC - 4:2:0) and playing it to Chrome on another PC. The transcoder is attempting to convert the Video to 1080p (from 4k) and Audio to AAC Stereo (from DCA 5.1) - no subtitles
Hardware transcoding is turned on and it is “acknowledging” that hardware transcoding is being done. My question is my video only plays for about 14-15 seconds and starts buffering. Tautilli gives me the speeds of the transcoding, and they are incredibly slow…I’m lucky to hit 1.0. Considering my graphics card is supposed to support this type of 4k video (checked the specs), I’m questioning why I am having so many problems.
I actually get better results tuning off the hardware transcoding…I can get 3 minutes (roughly) of video - uninterrupted. The documentation I have read states that this card should be able to support the 4k files.
I’m attaching the logs. If anyone can assist - perhaps a setting in Plex OR with the GPU needs to be adjusted. I’ve tried everything I can think of to this point, so any insight on this would be GREATLY appreciated. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-19_11-52-02.zip (1.9 MB)
Thank you in advance. I’m attaching my Plex logs in a zip file.
FYI, if this is something you’ll do on a regular basis (as opposed to testing transcoding) then use Plex Media Player. It does not have the limitations imposed by web browsers. It will direct play 4K media on non-4K displays. Handles more audio codecs as well.
In the case of using Chrome (a question I posed), the media player was a great option to address that…Thank you.
However, I am still wondering if I have an incorrect configuration since the HW transcoding seems to under perform software transcoding. I forcing it to transcode to see the performance.
I purchased the GPU for this purpose, so my hope is that it can do 4K transcoding as the specs indicate.
For some reason, I have found that my cpu/gpu combo can transcode 4K hevc quite easily to 1080p, but if I ask the exact same task AND burn in subtitles at the same the system can’t keep up…
So subtitles are out of the question for me in this instance. I use a i5-7500 with its integrated hd630 gpu which supports hevc 4K files in HW acceleration
I want and tried to stream a 4k movie forcing it to downgrade to 1080p. My GPU is a GTX 1060 6GB and I have E5-2670 x2 (Xeon), so that should be enough to transcode (I would think). The card is supposed to support 4k transcoding. @KarlDag - Have you adjusted any settings? Do you know the transcode speeds you’re getting?
I’m just trying to figure out why my transcoding is not running like it should. I hope someone may be able to help.
Thanks to KarlDag to answering and to all those who too the time to read, thank you.
Of course any insight is more than welcome.
