Plex (tv.plex.PlexDesktop) version 1.110.0 [flatpak] needs updating

Raising a ticket is great and I read that, but how long ago was it sent? I mean besides the glitch we now have no updates, thanks to careless developers who would rather compliment new features on Android or iOS.

Tickets get lost, I’m hoping this one hasn’t? I can see why some users are ditching Plex after years and going for one of the other media servers, I’m patient to an extent, and I don’t want to migrate family members who use my server to another system, not this close to Xmas anyway! So can we actually have an update on this 3 year old issue and how far up or down the ladders we are with the fox for glitches and getting up to date coffee into the mix finally?

Dave

  1. The ticket did not get lost. It was updated two days ago.
  2. I am following what’s going on.
  3. There is one thing in the notes I don’t understand and have asked for additional details.

EDIT: I was just informed of the resource conflicts. I’ve commented in the ticket and expressed everyone’s concerns.

Hey Chuck,

Cheers for the update, and with the increase in Linux users, things are moving eh? Besides updates to Plex I’m a little confused with the worldwide stats page, seems Linux hasn’t budged at all but the Unknown OS has jumped since Zorin downloads…. As I see it Linux is a Kernel and the Stats see Distro’s as Uknown?

Anyway that’s off topic…. will we see a unified Player for Linux as Roku and Android have? Would make things easier when going between OS’s etc etc…..

I shall refer to you as Squadron Leader from now on… We will be your wingmen…..

Dave

My fist comment here on github:

No news about that ?

There is no good reason a resource conflict takes 3 months to figure out. Plex collects money from users and then advertises its flatpak as an official source, but refuses to maintain it. This app is still using a legacy windowing system and an end of life runtime. For a paid service to be ignoring their software worse than an open source project is pretty unacceptable. Get it together Plex.

I don’t control Engineering’s task scheduling.

I have asked for info about the scheduling.

At best, it seems like the task schedule is focused on the wrong things. At worst, it seems like no one is in control of a logical task schedule. Either way no one with any meaningful insight exposes themselves to public interaction.

@xmready

Please try to remember that there are higher priority tasks going on.

It is well established how much effort has been involved in updating the transcoder to FFMPEG 6.1 which benefits all Plex users.

I’m sorry that you’re having this issue but there are only so many manhours in a day to get things done.

I’m sorry you disagree with prioritizing the transcoder higher than Flatpak packaging which impacts far fewer users.

When the transcoder is released, these other tasks (like Flatpak) will finally be able to bubble to the top.

Updated Linux today and now all my plex apps are dead.

Plex should put out a native Linux app, or an appimage, not this flatpack crap. Flatpacks all have issues. Every last one. And for the Plex Flatpack, service is 100% down.

Keeping an official package maintained should not have to compete with the work happening on the transcoder. Maintaining official release channels is basic housekeeping. Releasing a new transcoder is feature work and should be happening separately.

No idea what any of this means, I’m not even sure what Flatpacks are :-). I’m on fedora 43 workstation edition running gnome 49.1.

Regarding flatpak and specifically the plex one, its working perfectly, no issues whatsoever. Yes, this info message is an annoyance but at least for the moment its nothing more than that. You’ll need to be specific about what issues you have, but I bet its beyond the flatpak app itself and something else.

Well, there’s 1 main bug and 1 major annoyance with the Plex desktop for linux in general

  1. There’s year long bug as reported here: Weird white squares all over the place with latest version, where fix is seemingly straightforward.
  2. The other is flatpak’s lack (or a bug?) of MPRIS implementation, meaning that you can’t actually use play/pause shortcuts via a keyboard or mouse. Plexamp has this with its flatpak and functions well, however, desktop version doesn’t.

I recently switched to linux, so I am not experienced well enough. But I certainly hope there are fixes to these.

Hey @ChuckPa Just to let you know, the issue is on the snap packaged also!

We’ve waited 3 years, what’s another erm……

Dave

@chesters47 Either you’re a Jellyfin or Emby convert? those who aren’t happy with the route Plex is taking?

I’m a patient man, I waited till I was 41 to have kids, now I have 2, and they enjoy using Plex on Linux, Android and Roku! and family use Plex on Samsung TV, Amazon Firesticks and various other devices…. Plex has the ecosystem I need, the other lack things, and if I remember correctly you still need to pay for some things on one or both the others?

I don’t push any type of Media Server, Operating System etc etc, just the Latter one Linux is and always will be my go to OS!!!

Dave

Apparently they are too busy working on the transcoder to handle maintaining their release channels. I suppose when they develop a feature, it’s at the expense of basic chore tasks. Maybe they fired all the people who are supposed to handle this stuff, or perhaps they never hired them in the first place.

EOL Libraries can lead to security issues. Considering it is fairly trivial to update for them, as the supported version would not require much effort, it is pretty sad that they cannot take care basic needs. It is issues like this recently that has kept me from subscribing, which I very much intended to do. Now I am deciding if I just go with Jellfyin, etc.

They must have Dev’s just sitting there twiddling thumbs? If it’s any cosellation to @ChuckPa the v1.112 update still has white blocks so I switched the workaround on to enable OpenGL, did the trick…. 2026 here we come 4 years after realeasing the broken version and well…. We need a fix, maybe if we got Trump to write out a 28 point plan we may get somewhere?

Dave

I submitted the issue to the dev team when first raised. I set the priority pretty high.

I do not have influence on their resource scheduling / planning.

There is nothing more I can do.

It’s stuff like this that keeps people from using Linux. And then developers have the audacity to say “We don’t focus on Linux because people rarely use it.” It really is circular and broken logic.

Funny how they find the time to implement data sharing, but can’t keep up with basic maintenance. The only person the public can talk to is a broken record of unhelpful canned responses.

What does having kids and being patient have to do with running out of date and end of life run times. Running on out of date and end of life runtime libraries for longer periods of time isn’t generally good for security, as those don’t get security patches anymore. Some people have been long-term subscribers to Plex so something can be expected then.

I still use Plex for the family members and friends that use my Plex but they all use Windows or Mac. I’ve switched over to Jellyfin for myself because Jellyfin seems to be better supported and having more development going on for both the client and the server than Plex when it comes to Linux.
