Plex Using 100+ GB of RAM during Schedule Tasks

I too am experiencing this. In my case my PMS is running on a Windows 10 PC. In the same vein, once the system updated to version 1.25.0.5282 the crashes started occurring. I have since updated to 1.25.1.5286 and the crashes are still constant (typically failing within 15 minutes of the service being restarted).

I have followed the steps above and have attached the crash report as previously requested.

A further update: Updated my Server to version 1.25.2.5319 and it is still crashing. I think I was able to make it crash by right clicking the System Tray Plex Icon and selecting ā€œUpdate Librariesā€.

Latest Logs and Crash Reports attached.

A further update on this… It certainly appears to be when the libraries are updating. I have been able to keep the Plex Server running by stopping the Plex Server from scanning the libraries, specifically I made the following two changes:

Under Setting / Library:

  1. Un-check the ā€œScan my library automaticallyā€ box, and
  2. Un-check the " Scan my library periodically" box.

This means the Plex Server is not going to find any new content I may add, but at least I can watch the Plex content through my clients.

Waiting to see if there are any further responses to this thread… my next step will be to try and figure out which library is causing the server to crash.

So for me I discovered that the crashes were specifically happening during ā€œScheduled Tasksā€. I tried to go through my scheduled tasks and see if I could single out a specific thing. When I scan, optimize, clean my library manually, it doesn’t crash on me. For me, it literally only happens during scheduled tasks. I couldn’t seem to narrow it down though. I went through and switched a bunch of things off and on hoping to not trigger the crash, but every time it still crashed. I had even gone through and cleaned up the database using the built in Plex SQL command line stuffs just in case that would help, and it was still crashing. At this point, I accepted that it’s something in scheduled tasks and scheduled them for a low/non viewing time and then just restart my Plex every time I get up in the morning.

Last I heard from anyone on the Plex team, there is something that happened when they changed how they want the database to work (if you remember the update that took a long time before restarting because of all the background changes it was doing); so we’re basically on standby with the issue until engineering puts out a hot fix/new update that will correct the issue. Engineering has been made well aware of the issue though, as far as I know.

That’s all I’ve got for updates and stuff I’ve tried and heard.

@cnrdickens

I missed this notification.

I see and thank you for the DMP files.

I run Linux , not windows. I’ll do what I can but may need turn this directly to Engineering

I am most curious to hear a fix or see an update that will fix this. I have been trying all sorts of settings on my Roku Player and on the server on a Synology NAS and finding no luck. I am glad to have found this thread which seems to at least acknowledge the issue is there and real. Thanks.

I tried this remedy of unchecking these 2 boxes and am still seeing a ā€œPlayback Terminatedā€ Conversion Failed. The transcoder process crashed.

I really don’t even know why its transcoding when the player and the server are on the same network and it is playing as a direct stream with the Roku player asking for it in original form.

@ChuckPa - I have done some further investigations and my forcing a manual ā€œScan Library Filesā€ on each library and checking the system tray icon, I know that for me, PMS is crashing whenever it scans my ā€œPhotosā€ media library. I recreated this several times and was able to crash the PMS every time.

I can delete and recreate the library, but will hold off in case you want any logs from the existing setup.

@cnrdickens

Thank you. That helps a great deal.

I’m just getting done with my forum work and will now spend some time in the debugger before unwinding to a movie before bed

EDIT: Windows?

Anyone here have 64 bit Linux crash dumps?

(I don’t have Windows here – Linux only)

Yes. Running PMS on Windows 10.

I will try to put together a crash dump from Linux. My server is actually on a Synology 720+ NAS which is backended with Linux. I am seeing consistent crashes in the final minutes of a movie or TV show, and sometimes during the middle of a movie anywhere from every 6 to 12 to 30 minutes.

I was going to do the downgrade, but when I tried to put the older 1.24 based package on my NAS installer, it told me that I cannot downgrade. I was concerned about database differences, so I left well enough alone and hopefully someone can find a way to fix this. I will try a crashlog collection tonight based on the criteria you people have posted above and upload it. Its pretty easy for me to replicate. If I just fast forward to about the final 8 minutes of a movie, it’ll crash within 20 seconds.

Hello - I am running the latest server version#: 4.72.0 and have experienced random crashes for the last month or two.

I am running my server on Windows 11 and never had issues previously. It seems to only crash when i am playing media. Doesn’t matter if it is direct play or transcoding. It crashes every 20 minutes or less when watching content. The player doesn’t matter either.

I have attached the log.

I too am back to experiencing 10+ crashes a day since the last update. My server crashes about 2-3 times a day normally but some updates this happens where it just doesnt want to stay up at all. Last update i was on it was only crashig 1 or 2 times a day sometimes none a day.

I too have had nothing but crashes. In fact my entire server crashes down and completely closes. Since I dont use my server everyday, ill get a call from a friend and he will be like dude your server is down again. Needless to say ill go and check and sure enough, plex server is no longer open on my computer. Ive never had this issue before and it started happening a few weeks ago. WTF is going on? How do I go about trying to troubleshoot this issue? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as its starting to get on my last nerve.

Thank you in advance.

It’s gotten so bad i cannot even make it through a movie without it crashing. Has to be the update, all my users are saying the same thing.

I did everything at the top of this post to enable debug logging and to stop the server from sending crash reports to Plex. However, I have nothing in the crash directory except the 3 directories, and they are all empty. Also, when I try to do a download of the logs, I get a web redirects that starts with the IP address of my server but ultimately won’t let me open a URL that lets me download the logs.zip.

This isn’t technically crashing my PMS entirely. It puts up the error that the transcoder failed and then when I click ā€œOKā€, I can resume the movie or just play it from the start. I don’t need to reboot or restart the server.

I have no crash logs to upload, or no way to upload my general logs, aside from grabbing them right out of the filesystem manually. I’m not sure what else I can do to help to provide a sample. How I force a crash report to get documented? I can get open up the console and put it in debug mode and then download the debug output if that helps. Then maybe gather up the logs directory and zip it up? Would that help? Do these logs help? I just found these in the logs directory, these are the output of what happens in the final 7 minutes of this movie. This would be a 64 bit Linux version to look at…
Plex Media Server.log (505.9 KB)
Plex Transcoder Statistics.log (92.0 KB)

Now that im paying attention to the server, this thing is crashing like every 20 mins. Never been this bad before

@ChuckPa - did you ever get anywhere with my debug logs for a Unix based Synology NAS? I am still seeing the issue. Although at times, I have seen it less lately, and I don’t know why that would be. Its still the same software version from 12-7-21. Did this passed along to engineering to figure out? Should we be seeing a new PMS version anytime soon? Seems like a pretty widespread issue. I would think someone would have figured this one out by now since its there in the newest code, but not in the previous versions.

Has anyone tested the latest v1.25.3.5385 yet?
