Is it possible to use plex via USB 3.0?

No. For Plex to work on your Smart TV you’ll need a Plex Media Server of your own to run (or of friends who share some libraries with you).
A twist to this proposal, would be a USB adapter connected by Ethernet to a plex server. It has be mentioned in the forums to be successful in increasing your network speed to your TV . Use case for large bit rate 4K titles higher than 100mb/s. Hitsville-UK was the OP on the subject, it was confirmed by others if I remember correctly.
I use Sony KD-49XF7596 Bravia.
I have a USB adapter. It works fine on the NVIDIA shield TV box but not on the TV
Confused. My Plex server is a dedicated pc on a gb network. So surely the bottle neck is the LG TV with its needlessly under spec 100mb. Don’t see how a faster sun adapter can help other than plugging it in as expected into the tv.
However this break some features which then don’t think there’s a network. Eg casting YouTube from a phone to the TV.
Well aware of the casting issue and by way the TV Ethernet port is the bottle neck not just LG all smart TV’s. No confusion here.

I read the initial post from the op and every time I read it I take it as he is asking if he can plug in a USB 3 hard drive with data into his TV and view it in Plex.
I may be wrong but I never took it to be a post about network at all.
Maybe so, well he can do that but there are many restrictions and yes no pretty Plex UI just folders.
So i guess it is a twist after all.
I don’t know why USB ethernet doesn’t work on the Sony TV. Do I have to change something in the settings?
The 100mbit ethernet from the TV is too slow for most UHD movies with a Bitrate over 60 on the plex server.
I suppose you’re referring to Sony offering an USB/Ethernet adapter? If they wanted to speed things up they could include a Gigabit Ethernet port (1000 MBit/s vs 100 Mbit/s). As pointed out above, even a modern WIFI can produce a faster connection (up to 300 Mbit/s).
This is not about throwing in some exotic adapter… it’s simply them feeling 100 Mbit/s is fast enough for everything (legal) that’s out there.
Also (as you ask)… this has nothing to do with Plex itself. It’s just about the technical capabilities of those TVs to establish a network connection.
streaming my 4k blurays with plex is not illegal though.
I have an USB/Ethernet at home. Nvidia shield has no problem with that and the TV has no Ethernet connection with it.
