Plex vs. Emby

First is Live TV with time shifting which we know is coming to Plex.

Has anything official been said about this or is this more of a logical conclusion?

We have been waiting for them to add it to the dvr beta for 8 months now, still no eta or any news in normal Plex update fashion. It drives me crazy they will tell us something is coming then take 10-12 months to actually release it because they have development adhd.

There are other similar posts as well that you can search for. Of course that doesn’t express any expected date or how far into development they are but it is an indication non-the-less.

Also base off things posted here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/230587/plex-dvr-to-live-tv-in-works/p1
“It is not currently possible to watch TV live or time-shift it before the recording has ended. Recordings must complete before they can be viewed. Live TV/time-shifting is an area in which we’re interested.”

I doubt they would post anything such as “interested” if they weren’t really “interested”.

Ok, wasn’t sure if there wasn’t something more concrete.

We have recently seen the program guide appear in the Android TV app, along with a button to watch shows live (doesn’t work), just FYI.

I’m perfectly happy with them taking their time to ensure its done right instead of throwing out incomplete and poorly tested features.

PS: When has Plex ever provided an ETA on a feature?

Spoiler: Never. Why would you expect them to start now?

Long-time user of Plex, I decided to try Emby last year with a premier account. Initially it was interesting to see how Emby did things differently, but over the course of a few months I used it less and less. Their Apple TV interface (the one I use most frequently) is just awful. The web interface, not that much better. I did really like how it grouped collections of movies automatically – it even collected the two Airplane movies I had under one banner. Very nice!

But the negatives far outweighed the positives for me and I finally decided to uninstall yesterday. At that point, it was just taking up space.

When they actively start to advertise a feature to sell it for Plex Pass subs, even when it’s in a closed beta… Oh wait they’ve been doing that since day 1 of the beta. It just seems lately Plex is more interested in adding 10% of a feature then heavily advertising it to sell Plex Pass. The DVR has been that cash cow for about 7 months now, the dev team pretty much stopped responding in that forum too.

lol

Your premise is entirely grounded in “they’re not attentive enough to me and they’re not working fast enough.”

The Dev team left the dvr unfunctional for about a week recently due to the episode guide not being able to be downloaded. We had a 4 page topic in the forums trying to get the devs to take a look into it, no response. During this outage the Plex team was busy advertising the DVR and EPG to social media to sell Plex Pass. Yeah I can be a bit critical of this beta when they have a service impacting outage that takes 7 days to be resolved. Then 10 days later the same thing happens again and it takes another 2 days to get it fixed.

Hehe, then I guess you got something a bit more concrete then I mentioned. If you saw that in the Android app then you know there is work being done on it.

I can assure you the DVR portion of the system is under heavy development. Like the HW builds the DVR is still in BETA but is part of the normal Plex-Pass release cycle since it’s stable enough to be part of the system for all to play with. But it’s still a beta. The development will come in cycles with fixes and new features.

I specifically remember the thread about this and bigwheel was attentive as ever. He even told people to reach out on facebook/twitter for faster responses in the feature (they don’t just spend all day looking at the forums, ya know, cause they’re developing).

PS: you realize their marketing department is probably separate from their developers, right? something to consider instead of just bitterly assuming the worst
