Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156
Player Version#: 4.18.1
I share some libraries with a friend. He is having an issue that the option for him to stream in original quality isn’t available on plex web. However for exactly the same files, the option is available for me. I have made sure that our settings are exactly the same - i.e. maximise quality on and automatically adjust quality off.
I have also made sure it’s not a cookie issue, as we have tried in a fresh browser. We have tried on both Chrome and Firefox. He is running Windows 10, and we have also tried this on Chrome for MacOS.
This is quite an annoying bug as it makes Plex unusable for him (my server is optimised for bandwidth rather than CPU, so original quality is almost always preferable). Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks - it works and is a workaround, but web is a much more convenient client as it doesn’t require installation. Are the native clients due to replace web? Or are both to be maintained?
Plexweb is intended as a Player - if you have lots of horsepower for transcoding. Plexweb runs in your Browser and as such can Direct Play very little.
The New Player or PMP (Plex Media Player) are designed to basically Direct Play anything you throw at em - mostly.
Your Friend’s ‘Remote Quality’ setting is key here. That setting should be well above most of your material and well below your maximum upload bandwidth, but Plex normally won’t try to Direct Play something remotely that won’t fit into your upload pipe, so you could have your friend use ‘Original’ for Remote Quality - theoretically.
You should also ‘Require’ the installation and use of one of the ‘more advanced Players’ to afford every opportunity for Direct Play - until you try to send something that won’t fit in your upload, or your friend’s download pipes.
It is, what it is and Plexweb isn’t the right tool for this job.
