Plex transcodes OPUS music to AAC even when the web browser is capable of direct play. Modifying the script as in the linked post permits direct play. In 2024, all browsers except Safari support OPUS:

  • Chrome since 2014
  • Firefox since 2012
  • Edge (And all other Chromium based browsers)

It should be a trivial fix to enable direct play on all browsers except Safari.
