Plex Web would like to sign in to your Plex account

Hi

I have Plex saved as a bookmark on my Firefox bookmark bar with the following URL: https://app.plex.tv/desktop. This works fine when I launch it and opens a page starting “https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/server

But when I try to launch it by clicking on ‘Open Plex’ from the Plex Media Server in the menu bar, it takes me to a page starting “https://app.plex.tv/auth/#!?clientID=”. This page has a login popup that says " Plex Web would like to sign in to your Plex account", but when I feed in my login details, I get an error message stating “There was an error signing in” (see screenshot).

I’ve tried this on a different browser as well (Chrome). Same result.
I’m running OS Sonoma 14.0 on a Mac.

Any solutions?
Thanks

PS: I’m not sure how to check the ‘Player Version’.

Server Version#: 1.32.6.7557-1cf77d501
Player Version#:
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

This is opening a different web app. The “local” one. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288666-opening-plex-web-app/
So it is normal, that this has to be authenticated separately.

It is in general not recommended to use it, except for the initial setup of Plex server and in case of an internet outage.

Thank you for the reply.

But why is there an error in signing in?

Honestly, I don’t know. Since the local web app is pretty much always a few versions behind the hosted web app, it might just be that it contains a bug which has been fixed in later versions.

Well, I first started noticing this about a year or so ago, so I don’t think it’s just a version issue or it’d have been fixed at some point, no?

But thanks again. I guess the only solution is to ignore this and just use the web app then?

Maybe it has to do with either

  • the DNS you (or mor precisely your router) is using
  • interference from VPN or firewall software
  • additional software in the web browser
