Plex won't start if it can't ping

Hello,

my plex server won’t start if it has no internet or it can’t reache “172.64.146.103:443”. I added a new “allow plex to everything” rule on my opnsense. So now plex starts again. But it worked for years without this rule.

When did you upgrade to 1.40.2.8395 ?

  1. Pre-1.40 versions of PMS will require significant time to update the database on first-start of a post-1.40.0 version. Is this your first post-1.40.0 version ?

  2. PMS does require, at minimum, periodic connection to plex.tv to maintain the Plex-Pass status

  3. The log snippet you provided shows what looks like an outbound block rule is impacting connecting to Plex.tv

I upgrade really soon after an update is published. Mostly a couple of days after it was released.
So I need a firewall rule for plex.tv? Is there a wiki article with the ips and ports I need to allow?

PMS needs to talk to (outbound) Plex.tv and the metadata server for things to work.

If your security is , by default, blocking anything you’ve not defined THEN it indeed won’t work.

My PfSense is open outbound but fully closed inbound. I restrict inbound connection requests to only those FQDNs I share my server with.

This works well for me.
