Hi
I have a Fiio Q5S portable DAC which I use plugged in to my laptop which is reading files using both Plexamp and Plex windows app via wifi from my server desktop pc.
I have many 24/96 flacs which are working fine with my DAC if I use Plex App itself (ie the DAC is showing that it’s decoding at 24/96, but if I use Plexamp it’s showing up as downsampled to 16/44.
Is there any way to get “bit perfect” out of the Plexamp, as I prefer Plexamp’s features to the main Plex App? Are there any settings in Plexamp, which I am missing to enable bit perfect? Audio output is direct to the DAC, loudness is off, fades off, equalizer off, preamp set at 0, no limiter imposed…
I am baffled why the dedicated Plexamp for music is downsampling and the vanilla Plex app is not.
This is my only gripe with an otherwise excellent Roon alternative. If I get this sorted, Ill be a 100% convert to Plex
PS… If I use the android Plexamp app to output to Chromecast Audio which in turn feeds optically into my Mojo DAC, it’s not downsampled; correct sample rates are being displayed by the mojo . Baffling.
now I’ve just tried 2 separate laptops - Acer Swift 3 and Microsoft Go 2, 2 different DAC - Fiio K5 and Fiio Q5S, both are working fine with Plex app and both downsample with Plexamp.
I’ve disabled Sweetfades on both laptops.
I don’t understand what you mean by fixing the sample rate in the DAC, it’s autoswitching. If the source is sending 16/44 then I don’t want it to upsample to 24/96. Clearly Plexamp is downsampling somehow to 16/44. It’s this that I would like to stop happening if possible.
If Plexamp is not able to output Hires, then no worries, I’ll know it’s limited in this regard and work round by using Chromecast audio, perhaps.
Otherwise, I’m just wondering if there’s something I should be doing like adding drivers or some other settings, to get it to work?
Cheers!
PS see here…
Working fine in Plex app - yellow indicates hires 24/96 OK!
Plexamp doesn’t change the SR of the sound interface by default. You need to activate that in its settings (and that is not available on Windows, yet).
But it usually means the loss of sweet fades.
Thanks for reply, but either Plexamp is outputting the signal as it’s receiving it from the server, or it’s not? My point is, if it’s not outputting 24/96 bit perfect but is downsampling to redbook cd format to a connected DAC then surely fudging in settings to force the dac to upsample a 16bit 44k signal is not optimal?? My question remains… does Plexamp downsample whatever hd signal it’s fed or can it send a 24/96 signal (for example) to any suitable USB DAC?
Plex vanilla app is fine - HD in HD out
Plexamp seems to be HD in Redbook out,
Plexamp on Windows does not yet support exclusive mode, which is required for auto sample rate switching (plex devs have indicated it’s not trivial to implement … haven’t entirely ruled it out, but currently not planned). Since Plexamp currently runs in shared mode, files not matching the Windows system settings will get resampled.
Standard Plex app does support Windows exclusive mode, but it’s a different codebase (can’t reuse for Plexamp).
There are other platforms where Plexamp does have auto sample rate switching … Mac, iOS, and Raspberry Pi are three that I know of
thanks for that clarification, it was just bugging me that the generic plex app would allow Hires playback and yet, the audio-dedicated app does not. Now it’s clear, I’ll just have to accept and move on, lol.
