No ability to browse music, no playlist management, no title bar on windows to be able to move the fricken thing around, no static UI elements…
I love plex, but I hate how music keeps getting mishandled. Is there any plans to make Plexamp more like a proper music player (aka Winamp) or should I just abandon ship now?
Myself, I was really disapointed with Plexamp. I consider another pricey lifetime subscription for Roon (for music) instead. Awesome UI (also includes Tidal integration which is awesome) but once again… expensive. Gapless playback and suitable for audiophiles. Currently only playback in the local network. Remote play is on the roadmap though and also possible to use VPN if you are technical minded.
Myself, I use the normal PLEX android app for my phone and use my PLEX server with Toslink output at home with Foobar2000 currently.
Yeah Roon has been on my radar for a little while now. Waiting to have some time to give the trial a real go through.
I already have VPN setup to home from all my devices so Roon not having remote play built in is a non issue for me. Though, live transcoding would be nice for mobile streaming.
Well considering the fact that winamp created or contributed to one of the greatest lossless audio compression algorithm’s in our life time and changed digital music as we know it…
Until you change back to the semi browse mode which I haven’t found a way to get out of besides clicking on a different song which I may decide not to do.
Or if the window ends up off screen like what happens often on changing multi monitors setups there is no mechanism for windows to be able to click and drag from offscreen.
Abandoning standard window design is bad UI design, period.
So need to involve an entirely different input method for something that is easily done on any other app.
Like I said, it is bad UI design, period.
If plex is going to make grand gestures as to call plexamp a continuation of Winamp, then at least try to make it as good as winamp. Currently it bares no resemblance to Winamp and the name and slogan of plexamp is an insult to Winamp and its users.
Roon offers a MUCH more comprehensive UI but it is still quite userfriendly. Roon is also more suitable for dedicated audiophiles. Roon co-op with several big names in the Hi-Fi industry such as Linn, Naim, Elac, Oppo and so on… which makes their devices certified “Roon Ready” for Roon. For instance Roon have a better support for “high res” formats such as DSD and 24/192 khz FLAC. .
Tidal has a lot music but simply not “everything”. Even Spotify got considerbly more amount of music and that is still not “everything”. I have a huge personal collection of music with over 3 TB of FLACs. It’s not only mainstream music or released music. I been working with my collection for years and on a daily basis. I been ripping CDs from my personal collection, from friends that has several bookselfs of CDs, I been buying “unique” demo casettes for 100’s of USD on Ebay, I got a lot of unreleased music from pretty known artists from sites like what.cd (when piracy WAS still legal in my country)… All albums are handpicked by me. I working from home for about 15-20 hours a day and listen to music a lot. I done that for years…
Since Tidal can be “integrated” in the same interface/app togheter with my local music. There is no reason for me to not listen to my 3 TB of personal collection. Just to add… lots of this music are also very nisched artists like progressive trance/hourse from early 90’s or IDM etc. You might not find those at Tidal. I also consider myself as a “audiophile” so I been appreciating high res formats sometimes. Then some people tell it’s no difference, it’s a scam and so on. But people actually experience a difference and either Roon or Hi-Fi is something illegal. So people like me (a whole industry actually) will keep buying snake oil like Roon in free countries like this one.
Also I might have a salary of 15 000 - 40 000 USD a month (it’s true) alone if I reach my business goals with my own web marketing company. (I got quite some progress and analysts say it might be possible in 1-2 years) Even if taxes are quite high… I mean. Why not buying Roon!?
Until you change back to the semi browse mode which I haven’t found a way to get out of besides clicking on a different song which I may decide not to do.
You need to click somewhere else (outside of that window) so it returns to the player.

In fact, anything that requires the user to think what should he do or how should he do it is a sign of bad UI/UX design.
To be honest tho, I installed Plexamp like 7 months ago or more maybe. How long is it out? I installed it as soon as I read the email or blog or whatever. It is beautiful, to be honest, but I remember trying to move it for a good 5-10 minutes before closing it altogether. In fact, I just recently read in the forums that you can move it after playing something. I thought I should give it another try. I was disappointed again, not much changed in the last months (last year?). It is still very hard to navigate, harder to move, small bugs all around the place (can’t select first 4/5 tracks) and a lot of missing features. Like repeat and shuffle. Or am I blind and can’t see them because it seems very basic to me. I never even remember seeing a player without repeat.
I really like the small window and visualizers, especially they fit very well with my workflow. However, for the time being, Plex Web is the better choice simply because Plexamp is still a half cooked software. Now I know it is a preview, but for how long it is going to stay that way? I like the fact that Plex developers are working on the PMS and mobile apps a lot more in the last year (specially deciding to kill Plex cloud was a big positive sign), but if Plexamp was going to get forgotten this fast, why even bother to release it?
