Plexamp interface (for windows 10)

Hey guys I am a roon user who is trying to migrate to plexamp to avoid roons insane lifetime fee. So far plexamp is ok but woudl really appreciate a redesign of the windows interface. Something that looks more like a full app with a top bar, a playlist/album area, a side playlist area… if you look at stuff like roon and even tidal.

I know that you have designed plexamp to be optimal for mobile devices thats why it looks the way it does but we need something more windows focused.

Thanks!

Conversely, and in fairness, as a Roon user I can honestly say their mobile app (for iPhone at least) looks absolutely awful. Swings and roundabouts.

It must be really hard to come up with a compromise most people will like, I guess.

I guess plex is focused a lot on mobile use. But my use case is hifi listening on my home system. For that the roon remote app works extremely well on tablet. I guess as it stands plexamp just doesn’t have what I want? I hope it does come eventually though (better windows interface, remote tablet).

As for your first post:

Plexamp has those sections – they’re just not organized like room or iTunes, instead you can access the full library (artists, albums, compilations, tracks, playlists, artist/album collections, genres, styles…) through the tabs at the bottom of the app window (which admittedly seems to be a UI based on mobile apps… then again that doesn’t prevent it from working on a desktop).

As for your second post:

If your other hifi equipment supports some of the common casting/flinging technologies you can well do that with Plexamp (e.g. using Google’s Chromecast protocol, Plex’ own Plex Companion…).
That being said Plexamp is certainly not designed as a remote control for other equipment – that’s simply not the main use case.

I think you could be right. Roon does excel at multi room streaming Hifi despite the cost. It can be high maintenance at times though in my experience and I am on the fence about renewing my annual Roon sub in April.

Having looked into alternatives recently apart from Plex (Volumio, Music Bee, Foobar, even Emby), my main conclusion was nothing ticked most of the boxes like Roon. But Plex remains my wider media server software and I am going to give a go at installing Plexamp on one Raspberry Pi to see how it compares.

Ya I’ve gone through many and they all have large downsides that make me not very interested. Volumio requires mounting to use on windows which is annoying. Foobar, music bee and emby i believe don’t have tidal integration and don’t do nearly as good job with visual organization and metadata. Audirvana is just a slow buggy mess on windows.

Surprisingly the app I like the most besides roon is actually the windows tidal amp. Its incredibly smooth and well laid out. The only big downsides is no remote control feature (but its coming) and no local file integration (I suspect that will never come).
