Plexamp just sits there when I try to play

#1

I seem to be able to browse my library, but when I try to play stuff, often times it just sits there with no feedback that anything is happening (and never ultimately plays).

Logs from when I experienced this:

Same here. Searching appears to work but I just get a blank (gradient) screen when I click play on an artist, album, or song.

#3

I also have this problem - I can browse and view album art - but nothing else happens. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the app to make sure that wasn’t an issue, but had the same results.

#4

Same here. Maybe it needs to generate some kind of metafiles first? The same library of music plays just fine in the web client.

EDIT: I should note that this is the Win10 client running against an Ubuntu music server.
EDIT2: I seem to be having better luck after a reboot. Now the only problem is that it seems a little slow to start.
EDIT3: Day two and everything seems to work perfectly. I have a pretty large library and it appears to have taken a while for things to settle down on the server side.

#5

I think my music library is too big for Plex to handle- my TV shows aren’t loading smoothly since I added in my music. Guessing Plexamp might be not working for similar reasons. But either way… looks like I’ve gotta tap out and let Plex get back to what it does best: serving TV/Movies. Back to iTunes for m’tunes!

#6

@dkordik ~ if nothing else, make sure you optimize your database after adding all that music, it can be super helpful in terms of performance.

Huh, your log shows some interesting errors trying to fetch a codec for playback.

Dec 19, 2017 13:40:55 ERROR - PlayQueue: Exception fetching codec for track mp3

Best I can tell, it wasn’t able to find a path for a temporary file:

'C:\\<snip>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp;C:\\Android\\android-sdk\	ools;C:\\Android\\android-sdk\\platform-tools\	mp-4760MHaywR5JIfgm.tmp'"

What’s your TMPDIR (or similar) environment variable set to?

#8

I’m having similar problems – app starts fine, appears to be fully functional and talking to my Plex server, but when you hit play it appears to switch to play mode (the play symbol changes to a pause symbol) but it just sits there with no music coming out and the time on the track never advancing. OS X 10.10.5, server is melissa (192.168.1.169) on the LAN running Ubuntu Plex.

The biggest thing that catches my eye in the logs is a whole lot of instances of

[MPD] Error connecting:Error: This socket has been ended by the other party

If MPD is Music Player Daemon that seems like it would go a long way to explaining the issue…

Hi Elan -

Removing these lines:

C:\Android\android-sdk\ ools
C:\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

from my temp variable fixed the issue! Thanks!

#10

@HairyElvis ~ Glad to hear, thanks for letting us know!

@colomon ~ sounds like maybe MPD is crashing? Check /tmp/mpd.log for clues, maybe.

@elan, good call, I think:

“built for Mac OS X 10.13” seems like it might be the cause? Could it be your MPD isn’t backwards compatible?

#12

I have the ‘just sits there’ problem as well - local machine is macOS 10.12.6; Plex library has been pretty static for a number of weeks; playing through a web browser is no problem - though i have multiple users set up and Plexamp only asks for my Plex login and not to select a user, so i’m not sure what it’s doing behind the scenes about that.

The application and server logs are both complaining to various extents, but the mpd.log looks fine. Thoughts?

#13

My songs will start rather quickly, but there’s a huge delay when trying to scrub through a song. Most likely my network but it’s a little frustrating since all my music is local to the same machine.

Mine is doing the same thing. Can you be more specific about how you did this?

#15

I had this same issue, my logs showed a different error though. It was working but i accidentally pulled the power cord to my laptop (no battery) and powered off my laptop. Needless to say plexamp wasn’t working afterword. I attempted to uninstall and reinstall to no avail. Also for those unaware of the LOGS LOCATION, they are located in the below mentioned folder/dir.

WHAT DID fix my issue was deleting the plexamp folder AFTER performing an uninstall:
C:\Users\sekthree\AppData\Local\Plexamp
Reinstalled, Logged in, BOOM now working again!

Just another triage step for those having issues.
Windows 10(64) : plexamp1.0.0.0 : PMS1.8.4.4249

#16

I’ve got this issue too; running macOS 10.13. Plexamp has no trouble connecting to my local PMS, displays the content of my library (including ‘recently played’ from other devices), but when I try to play a track playback never starts. Same content plays just fine in web player and via Plex Tivo app.

Whoops! We’ll look into it.

I think you’re running into the same issue where we may have built MPD incorrectly. Egg on my face.

#19

Also having this exact problem on OS X 10.10.5.

#20

Will be fixed in the next version.
