Plexamp stays in foreground, uses way to much battery

Hi there

Dunno where this goes so hopefully right spot. Back at the office and notice the plexamp doesn’t go into background on my phone, and has used half my battery in 5 hours of usage. This doesn’t seem normal as I assumed it would move into background to use less power

No visualization.. just the CD album art on the screen

Phone: Razor Phone 2
OS: Android 9

Say Plexamp updated last June 30 versions 3.5.0

Let me know what else you require for this.

Thanks!!

I might be misreading, but it says “17%” for ~6 hours, which would translate to ~30 hours of audio streaming. Seems pretty reasonable?

OK but i have been off charger for 7 hours, 6 hours has been with plexamp, and i have used 50% battery

Doesnt that math mean i would only get another 7 hours, with another 6 hours of streaming left? so that 12 hours before battery dead

I think the plex APP preforms way better in the background for playing music than plexamp at the moment. I would need to do more testing, but i usually left it playing in the background while i was at work and didnt have it draining this fast

If you think this is how it should be then ok…it seems to be draining way faster than I am used to with the OG plex app

Yes, but Plexamp didn’t take all of that, right?

In the graph above “battery usage since full charge”, Plexamp only took 17%

Other stuff added up to 50%.

@wyild1

First of all, have you tapped the 3 dots on that screen and picked “show device usage”? This will give you more items that will have added to those 50%, such as the screen.

Secondly, 17% for 5 hours is normal and is pretty good. Remember that Plexamp streams the music which keeps the device radio active which is battery intensive. Even if the music is offline, it will ping the server often.

Thirdly, I wouldn’t give too much thought on the background stat. I don’t think it matters if the phone sees it as a background process or not because, I assume, Plexamp needs to hold a wakelock anyway for the device radio to be active. Hence the phone can not really “sleep” while Plexamp is active. But that is just an assumption though.

Thank you Very much for the replies

I was comparing Plex APP to Plex AMP, but looks like it was incorrect to do that. I have my music synced under Plex APP, so the battery usage is way less than Plex AMP, which is not synced, and streaming direct from the server

I would like to use Plex AMP more as it doesnt crash when trying to listen to music on it as the plex APP does., but not a fan of the bandwidth to stream all the time.

Once again, thank you for the info. Just have to get used to this thats all. Well that and maybe an upgraded phone with better battery hahaha

You could download music to Plexamp also. Instead of sync, it is called downloads. Just long press, for example, an album and choose download. It’s very easy and will be better on your battery

Thank you again for the tip! So many new features…even though used it for a while it has changed (used to be limited to 24hours or something before)

being about to sync/download my playlists will make the final switch yay!

The 24 hours limit per downloaded playlist still remains.

Thank you for that info.

Seems Plex amp won’t do how I would like. Even if I hit shuffle on my playlist, and with 24hrs downloaded, and saying prefer local when on cellular…I still have lots of data (and battery) usage because it’s not like it would pick these downloaded ones first/always to not use data. Almost would have to turn off data to force that.

Would have to take my playlist with 16days of music and pretty much make 16-24hrs playlists to download it all …then I dunno playlist to play random playlists that are now all local…

I do understand I can just say play my downloaded ones only if i go in downloads. Dunno if it would refresh and download different stuff daily or weekly? Or I’m just stick with these ones until I force a refresh?

Needs more thought

Thank you!

Downloaded smart playlists will refresh if you have the Refresh Downloads option turned on (Settings-Downloads-Refresh Downloads).
