Plexamp: Support for Hi-Res music

I’ve seen this suggestion many times and the development was promised many times.

Please make it happen.

Maybe it is barely noticeable between 16/44.1 and 24/96.

But with proper equipment, 24/96 deliver more than 16/44.1

I want to enjoy my hi-res music library.

There’s already an existing suggestion asking for Plexamp to (better) support Hi-Res music (24/96) – while that thread is in the context of a specific RPI configuration, the underlying request is the same. I suggest you comment/vote in that thread instead to avoid distracting/dispersing votes… unless you feel this is a completely different suggestion.

I never had a problem doing hi-res on Plexamp Desktop (macOS). There is the recent addition of “exclusive” mode on MacOS Plexamp which has been good. So far, I have everything upsampled, but theoretically they are working on a “tracking” bitrate functionality, so it should output exactly as the file’s resolution. Much of my library is 24/96 right now, and I haven’t noticed any issues with it.

Where do you get a hi-res music library? Is it just via streaming with TIDAL?

All I have ever purchased is 16/44.1 CDs or regular downloads from Amazon and Google Play. If you have a local library, can you elaborate on good places to buy 24/96 music?

There are a few albums which will be releases on SACD which should offer HiRes audio.
In addition there’s a few providers offering HiRes streaming and purchases (e.g. Qobuz)… last I checked, bandcamp also offered some HiRes audio.

That being said… it’s rarely your everyday mainstream charts in those stores.

I didn’t know the ‘exclusive mode’. But as I’ve tested it, there’s some problem.
I don’t want upsampling.
So, it’d be nice if plexamp for macOS can change output settings automatically like roon, audirvana, etc.

There’re some places you can buy hi-res music.
As @tom80H mentioned, Qobuz is good for classical music.
I personally bought some music from e-onkyo.com.
I’m not sure it’s available for you.

Btw, I usually use plexamp on my iphone. And plexamp for ios doesn’t have an option for hi-res.

@elan said they were working on tracking the sample rate changes to avoid upsampling in a previous post.

Ah, for iOS, Plexamp does downsample everything to 16/44.1 it seems. Rather unfortunate when used with higher end USB DAC’s.

I have a DragonFly in house at the moment, so hopefully will be able to look into that.

My cats love it when a dragonfly gets in the house.

Hey Elan, any luck getting Hi-Res out from USB?

I am sure iOS is capable of it, since I can get 24/96 out from Tidal no problem. Seems like I can’t with Plexamp though, stuck on 16(?)/44.1 it seems even with 24/96+ files.

I hope that it is happening soon.
Plexamp for iOS (maybe Android, too) supporting USB DAC.
And Plexamp for macOS supporting automatic changing output bitrate.

Yeah iOS makes it pretty easy compared to Android

My current setup is an iPad Pro with a USB DAC and some delightful wired IEMs… would be great to get my hi-res from PlexAmp coming out at full quality :+1:t2:

When Plexamp (iOS or Android) supports, it would be the only one which can play hi-res music streaming from my own library.
I found some mobile players but they require me to have a lot of storage. It’s too expensive and I don’t want to have redundant library.
Or they can play songs from cloud services. But I already have a well-organized library on my dedicated server.

I think it’d be a good selling point for audiophiles.

I’m not sure I understand this feature request—is it for a specific endpoint? I’m happy to take a screenshot of Plexamp natively playing a 192/24 FLAC on iOS—though I suspect the D/A conversion is being done by Apple which is probably less than optimal. Is this not really happening behind the scenes? My server doesn’t report transcoding…

Where to find high res FLAC files:

Indie/Smaller Bands: https://bandcamp.com/ (not everything is > 16/44, but sometimes it is)
Bigger Releases: https://www.hdtracks.com/
Lower Prices (sometimes): https://us.7digital.com/ (this store gets white-labeled- same as onkyo)
Electronic & Club: https://bleep.com/

Also, for new releases, many of the labels have their own store where you can buy FLACs or WAVs direct.

The point is to output greater than 16/44.1 to an external USB DAC. Currently, USB output reports 16/44.1 no matter the track sample rate.
