Since my Windows update on March 11, 2026, it is no longer possible to use my media in Plex even though I can see the media and libraries (It displays a message saying: Content unavailable after a few seconds when I try to play a media). I rarely use another program (Jellyfin) and it works very well, so I doubt it is my network. This morning, I installed the Beta version update and my Norton put PlexScriptHost.Exe in quarantine for the second time in a month (the other time was February 11, 2026). It says it has an IDP.Generic. I feel like I will have to uninstall everything and reinstall. Will I lose all my libraries if I uninstall my Plex server? Thank you!
Then tell Norton to release it from quarantine. It is most likely a false positive.
And contact the manufacturer of this anti virus software and tell them that they mark innocent apps as viruses.
Or maybe ditch this AV software.
I doubt it will change anything, as long as you keep using Norton.
But normally, you can uninstall and reinstall Plex Media Server without losing your data.
However, you must not use any sort of “uninstaller” or “registry cleaner” or “Windows optimizer” software. These tend to delete the data of uninstalled apps, and thus will destroy your Plex library after you have uninstalled Plex server.
Considering the massive number of supply chain threats trivializing this query will give many pause. In the current threat environment, a response devoid of solutions is of little value.
The vast majority of Plex users are simply seeking assistance to continue enjoying the product.
A viable response would detail the following insight: 1. Verify the File’s Safety
If uncertain, verify if the file location considering malware can occasionally disguise itself as legitimate files to bypass security.
Locate your Plex directory (typically found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server or C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server).
if the file is located in a random folder like your Downloads directory, you should leave the file quarantined and run a full system scan using a second utility
2. Add an Antivirus Exclusion
If your antivirus has blocked or quarantined the file and interrupted your Plex server, you can restore it and whitelist it.
Open your antivirus software settings
Find PlexScriptHost.exe and select the option to Restore and add to exceptions (or create an exclusion in your settings). For specific steps, refer to your software Exceptions Guide.
