PMP 3.0 (Win10) - MCE remote back button not working in PMP3

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 3.0.0.24

I’ve been using an MCE remote with Plex for years, but after switching to Windows 10, there are some buttons that do not work in the Plex Player - Back and ShutDown being two very annoying omissions.

I recall having to remap some keys using AdvancedMCERemoteMapper in Windows 7 to make Plex and the remote play nice, but that options doesn’t seem to work in Windows 10.

Does anyone have some pointers for what I could do - and keep using the same remote?

Inspect the log file of the player after you press the above mentioned button.
You should see as which button this was registered. Then you can go and adapt the appropriate inputmap.

Thanks! I followed the steps in the guide, but the log file registers the input from the MCE remote as coming from “keyboard” input - and not all keys pressed on the remote are registered in the log (back being one of them).

I have attached the log file here.PlexMediaPlayer.txt (67.9 KB)

If these key presses don’t show up at all, it is likely that there is a general Windows issue, preventing them from working.

I don’t have any experience with these devices, though I know that there are several different ones branded “Microsoft”, and even more no-name products, which all may have slight differences in function. But all bearing the term “MCE”.

Some key presses do show up, but according to the Plex log they are all coming from “keyboard” - though I have only pressed buttons on the MCE.

The model type that I have is this one:

It has the Microsoft logo and colored buttons at the bottom.

Does anyone have some insight on this? I’ve read a ton of forum threads on this issue (most of them pertaining to KODI - but with similar issues), but I am nowhere closer to a solution for this.

The buttons that do register in Plex from my MCE remote show up as coming from “Keyboard” in the logs - and when I check Device Manager/Keyboards there are several keyboards listed, which does look a lot like Windows thinks my MCE remote is a keyboard (my actual keyboard is a Bluetooth Apple Magic Keyboard - which has a device driver visible under the Bluetooth tab).

Anyone else running Plex Desktop in a Windows 10 environment and (successfully) using an MCE remote in TV mode? I would really appreciate some tips to fix this issue.

Do you have this issue with the non-preview / regular release? The version you have installed is a “preview” release and it would be good to know if the bug was recently introduced in the 3.x versions or is present in the 2.x versions.

Just tried removing the 3.0 preview Player and installed the latest 2.x (Plex Media Player v2.49.0) - and now the remote works (mostly)! The back button works and I am able to remap other MCE buttons using the keyboard.json file (but many MCE buttons still do not register in the log when clicked).

Anyway, with a back button that works, Plex has become remote controlled again (and the UI seems a lot snappier/responsive than in v3.0). So I think I’ll settle with this setup for now - and hope that nothing breaks.

Thank you!
