PMP gives HDR content green tint

Server Version#: Windows, Version 1.14.0.5470
Player Version#: 2.24.0.924-63fcaa8e (just got this from the app download page because it’s available NOWHERE in the app itself)

PMP gives HDR content a strong green tint as you can see in the attached image. This is a screen shot of playback of the intro to Westworld. The one on the left is from the 4k HDR blu ray, the one on the right is SDR. Not the exact same frame but close enough. It’s not just this title. It’s anything I’ve ripped or downloaded. Why does PMP give it a green hue?

Are these being transcoded instead of being direct played?

The transcoder does not handle HDR correctly and possibly never will. Only use 4K HDR content if you can direct play it, otherwise source or convert the HDR content to SDR before adding it to Plex.

When transcoding, HDR content merely seems washed out, low contrast, dim. This is direct play. The colors are saturated enough and the contrast is fine, but it’s like wearing green-tinted glasses.

Also just as a FYI the app version is there in the app itself.

Thanks. That seems to work only if you’re in “TV” mode. It’s not there in the standard layout.
The version number I posted is correct. I assumed it would be the latest since it updated only a day or two ago.

Ah yeah I forgot about that because I only ever use TV Mode.
You know what I had never realised until now but I see the exact same thing. (In TV Mode)
I just compared a few files in PMP and the native Plex LG TV app.
In the LG Plex app everything is far brighter. I don’t think its as pronounced a difference for me so I suspect it may be our HDR settings in Windows that need tweaking.

Oh and if NOT in TV Mode all the files definitely transcode for me but again I may need to tweak some settings there too.

I know it probably won’t help your situation but I may wipe Windows on my dedicated HTPC and test out PMP embedded later today.

EDIT.
Actually I just noticed that where I have Hardware Decoding enabled its set to “Enabled (copy-back)”.
I honestly have no idea what that is so I’m gonna read up on the wiki or Google.
But after changing to just “Enabled” the issue is gone for me.

Okay, Found that setting (It’s only in TV mode. Thanks Plex). I was on ‘Enabled (copy-back)’ and I switched it to Enabled and while I still see a green tint, it is now far, far less pronounced.

And I tried disabled, which (maybe I’m imagining it) looks even less green:

Although with hardware decoding disabled my CPU utilization is through the roof :\

You could just boot from a flash USB drive instead of wiping your operating system!

Its a long time since I messed with embedded.
So PMP can directly run off the USB?
Sounds pretty awesome for testing it out.

Make the USB installer, boot it and hit tab at the screen that prompts boot. Type run and hit enter.

Yep just tested it out. Thanks.

cool

Would have hated to see you format a system when you didn’t have to.

Moot point now. !! :grinning:

The steps I shared turns the installer into a permanent run from USB.

While experimenting with some other settings, I found that enabling Native OpenGL resolves all my color issues in all hardware decoding modes.

@dan-the-man And? So? Are you even experiencing color issues like I was? Thanks for chiming in.

A few helpful replies from Hitsville pointing me to the settings in TV mode and the hardware acceleration options and the rest of the thread is hijacked to troubleshoot other stuff, even by a moderator. I wish I could delete the whole thread because I’d be embarrassed if someone with the same problem came across this thread in a search had to wade through it all.
