PMS computer crashes when transcoding with recent PMS update

@Atomatth are you still available to assist me? Just like @FordGuy61 it would seem I am no longer receiving replies.

Having the application installed in the same location as the appdata folder, that’s not a good idea. It looks like at one point you had your transcode directory point to R: which may also be an issue. I would recommend uninstalling and installing PMS using the default locations.

  1. Shutdown your PMS. Use Windows control panel to uninstall Plex Media Server.
  2. Download the latest Plex Media Server
  3. Go through installer using the default install location, should be C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server

This should get your Plex Media Server application/binaries back to where they should be without needing to move any of your localdata. I’m assuming you use this guide or one similar to set the localdata to a custom location. Is that correct?

If you want to continue to use a custom location for your transcoder, I would recommend creating a directory specifically for it Plex_trancoder and adding the pull path in the PMS webUI Settings > Server settings - Transcoder

Thank you for your response.

I will perform the steps to reinstall PMS in its default location and retest.

To provide more information about the R: drive. The R: drive was created out of RAM. I had read and saw others perform this step to provide more read/write speeds for transcoding. So I converted 8gb of RAM into a partition, made it into a readable drive R, and then directed Plex to transcode there. I’ve been doing that for year with no issues. However, I did change the transcoder temp directory back to default temporarily for troubleshooting and the problem persisted. So based on that test the transcoding directory on R isn’t causing the hard lock issue.

I do not remember following the guide you specified. In fact, I don’t remember making any registry changes to modify anything with Plex. I remember running the Windows PMS installer and changing the install directory to the D drive. That should be it. Nothing fancy. I do see that the current install directory of PMS on drive D is over 65gb. Under appdata/local/plex media server there isn’t more than a couple mbs. So it would seem all data is being saved in the install directory, which I thought was normal. Maybe not?

A typical Windows install would install the application files in C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server and the data (DB, logs, plugins, cache, etc.) would go to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server. The default directory for storing transcoding sessions is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Cache\Transcode.

Looks like I missed the “why” using R: for your transcoding directory may be an issue. It is because the path is not correct. It should be R:\ or pointing to a directory instead of drives root R:\plex_transcoder.

@Atomatth

Unfortunately the computer locked up once again just after a user attempted to trancode the movie Jumaji on their media device. I had performed all the steps you asked me to perform but it would seem the problem is still persisting. I have sent you a DM with the new log.

Please let me know what the next troubleshooting step is.

@Atomatth ,

It has been 7 days since our last communication. I am not sure what a normal response time is from a Plex employee but 1 week seems to be far stretched. I understand that your time is needed else where. However, this has been an ongoing problem for months. I first started seeking official help on here since Feb 28th where I was receiving support from @FordGuy61 until he abruptly stopped responding to my messages for whatever reason and would seem he’s completely ignored further communication. No idea why.

I appreciate your time but at this rate, since it takes several days if not a week to get a response, this could take months before any real solutions could be had. I DM’d you a new log a week ago and I have also not received a reply back yet.

At this point in time I have told everyone who plays media from my Plex server to make sure to set the video quality to Max or Original so that there is less likely a chance to transcode. And the problem only happens when transcoding happens on PMS version 3.x. The problem does not happen on PMS version 2.x which tells me it is a Plex issue. So because of this, my computer hasn’t locked up for a couple days. But unfortunately, when someone has to reinstall Plex or installs a new media device, video quality set to Max or Original is not the default settings. So it is a short term fix to force everyone to set their video settings to Max or Original especially if the media device requires transcoding.

That being said I patiently but at the same time eagerly await more troubleshooting steps. If you’re unable to further support me, I would appreciate if you would connect me to someone who can.

Thank you.
