PMS Connection issues with various players

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: Plex Web
For the past 3-4 months now I’ve been having this issue where my plex server with either not show at all or will show the libraries but won’t load thumbnails or play media on some players.

Current players that are consistently affected is Plex Web (plex.tv, local plex webUI works fine), Amazon Fire stick and NVIDIA shield pro.
Sometimes the plex app on my apple TV won’t work either.

Plex App on IOS and samsung galaxy phones works fine.

The linux and windows apps work intermittently.

I have the logs but I don’t want to post the full logs for security sake. I can DM them though.

Here are some sections of note.

192.168.1.113 is my server computer

192.168.1.159 is the desktop I am watching it on

HI GasPoweredTomato,

Did in anytime all you mention worked properly?

If yes, my wildest guess is that you have to reinstall Media plex player first on your computer connected to your Local network and install/configure again everything that doesn’t work properly!

Sometimes they make changes on the systems and Plex becomes incompatible, can’t cope with the changes.

Hope it helps, hugs…

I have already tried reinstalling. Unfortunately it did not work. I’m also unsure why the WebUI doesn’t work. Yes they all used to function perfectly.

Giving your thread a bump since we spent some time over DMs a few days back…

  • you checked about the cert issue,
  • you saw db errors but ran the db repair tool and those were fixed,
  • you spun up a new instance, but the same issue came up
  • you changed the public DNS servers on your server and clients, no pihole or nextdns.
  • You had a custom server access url in the past when trying a reverse proxy, but that’s been removed.

WebUI doesn’t work? Gosh, that might be firewall, ad-blockers or so, have you tried using another browser?

I would love to help you, but my knowledge is limited.. :frowning:

Though you pay for the service, why the experts don’t help? :’(

They had a revenue of $115.1 million in 2024, no money for a support TEAM? God Lord.

Connection issues with Plex Media Server (PMS) on various players can often be resolved by restarting the router, using a wired connection, and verifying the Plex server and player are on the same network

. Other solutions include checking for server and network status, temporarily disabling firewalls or VPNs, adjusting MTU settings, and changing DNS settings to public options like Google’s 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1.

Basic troubleshooting

  • Restart network devices: Power cycle your router and modem by unplugging them for about 30 seconds, then plug them back in and restart the PMS and player.

  • Use a wired connection: If possible, connect your router and/or PMS directly to your network with an Ethernet cable, as this is more stable than Wi-Fi.

  • Check server and player location: Ensure both the Plex Media Server and the player are connected to the same home network, especially if connecting remotely.

  • Restart player and server: Turn off and restart the player and the computer or device running the Plex Media Server.

Advanced troubleshooting

  • Check network and server status: Look up the status for your specific player’s service (e.g., PlayStation Network, Xbox Live) and check if there are any known issues.

  • Adjust DNS settings: In your player’s network settings, change the DNS from automatic to manual and use a public DNS server, such as Google’s (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare’s (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1).

  • Disable firewalls/antivirus: Temporarily turn off your computer’s or network’s firewall and any antivirus software. If this fixes the connection, you’ll need to create an exception for Plex in your security settings.

  • Change MTU size: Log in to your router’s settings and try changing the MTU size. A common value to test is

    image

    14721472

    1472

    or

    image

    15001500

    1500

    .

  • Check router QoS settings: If your router has Quality of Service (QoS) settings, ensure they are not interfering with the connection. You may need to adjust them to prioritize the correct traffic.

  • Disable VPN/Proxy: Make sure no VPN or proxy is running on the device that is running the Plex server, as they can cause connectivity problems.

  • Change Wi-Fi band: If using Wi-Fi, try connecting to a different band. A 5 GHz band can be faster but has a shorter range, while 2.4 GHz can be slower but has a better range.

Issue is that it happens to all my friends too. WebUI just doesn’t work anymore.

Bumping this,

I tried using a new account - didn’t fix the issue

Tried deleting preferences.xml - didn’t work

I’m thinking it could be a dns issue since my wifi went out for almost an entire day a few months ago. I don’t know if this started after that but I may look into buying a new router and passing through my ATT one.

A new router and running att router in passthrough mode fixed this.
