PMS: extended periods without internet

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033 (or latest
Player Version#: latest

I’m looking for recommendations for running Plex Media Server & players for long periods without internet connectivity.

I’m helping a friend set up a complete plex system (PMS + players) on his sailboat. Sometime next year they’ll set sail for about a year of blue water sailing, which is to say they’ll be away from land for long periods of time. Possibly a month or more. When the are in port, internet availability & reliability will be variable.

Assuming initial setup is online, can it be made to work without internet?
Will PMS, with a lifetime plexpass, need to periodically validate the plexpass license?
Are some players better than others about working without internet?

We haven’t bought equipment yet, but here’s generally, the plan:

  • Liftetime plexpass
  • PMS running on a Synology NAS
  • A Smart TV with Roku built in, or possibly a dedicated Roku device
  • Possible playback via smartphones/laptops as well
  • Everything connected onboard via local wifi
  • Local wifi will be bridged to in-port wifi when available to get updates, etc.

Thank you for sharing this no-internet guide! I did see it and read through it. It’s helpful!

I think this situation adds the additional wrinkle of being without internet for a long period of time. I got the impression that guide had short-term internet outages in mind; maybe a few days.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience with making Plex work for several weeks or more without internet?
