I’m looking for recommendations for running Plex Media Server & players for long periods without internet connectivity.
I’m helping a friend set up a complete plex system (PMS + players) on his sailboat. Sometime next year they’ll set sail for about a year of blue water sailing, which is to say they’ll be away from land for long periods of time. Possibly a month or more. When the are in port, internet availability & reliability will be variable.
Assuming initial setup is online, can it be made to work without internet?
Will PMS, with a lifetime plexpass, need to periodically validate the plexpass license?
Are some players better than others about working without internet?
We haven’t bought equipment yet, but here’s generally, the plan:
- Liftetime plexpass
- PMS running on a Synology NAS
- A Smart TV with Roku built in, or possibly a dedicated Roku device
- Possible playback via smartphones/laptops as well
- Everything connected onboard via local wifi
- Local wifi will be bridged to in-port wifi when available to get updates, etc.
