PMS on Synology DS420+ recently refuses to serve .avi files

Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517
Player Version#: 5.3.1
Platform 4

Server: Synology DS420+
Client 1: Samsung Smart TV
Client 2: OSX Firefox 82.0.2 (64-bit)

After an update sometime at the beginning of September 2020, some movies stopped streaming to the TV. No hardware changes have been made.

  • the “Buffering” pinwheel will show, but no video nor audio is played
  • the screen goes black…
  • occasionally an error will display

Which files? I believe it’s only the .avi files.

  • .avi files previously streamable now are no longer streamable
  • when converted to .mkv, the same files are still not streamable

Hardware Acceleration does not support your mpeg4 (.avi) files

I’m confused about something: Why did it work in August? Why does it not work any more?

Definitely - this isn’t just one or two files, it’s dozens that I’ve watched on this same server hardware, and same TV client. However when they worked it was in August or before. This is what I meant by “recently” in my topic title.

As I mentioned the hardware has stayed the same, and the files have stayed the same… the only thing that changed was the software.

May I see your debug log files which capture this please?

I just checked with some AVI files I have and they are able to play.

When you capture the logs, would you also be kind enough to grab the XML (hover over it - get info - view XML) and attach that as well?

Here’s the Server log.

Which XML should I be trying to get?

Let’s try this again please:

  1. Hover over the item you’re about to play -> Click ellipsis -> Get Info - View XML

  2. Copy / paste the part from the top down through </Media> . You can also place in a file.

  3. Now play the file.

  4. Let play 20 seconds

  5. Stop playback

  6. Wait 20 seconds for logs to quiesce

  7. Download the logs ZIP file (Settings - Server - Troublehooting - Download Logs)

  8. Attach that ZIP file

Thanks!

I’ve renamed the .xml file with a .xml.txt extension, because the forum wouldn’t let me upload .xml :

ISAW.xml.txt (25.9 KB)

thanks,

you have a system with the J4xxx cpu family but dont set the driver option for it (Intel bug). The IHD driver still has trouble (waiting on Intel). This is a common issue with AVI files.

Thank you, I’m going to look into this

It worked! Thank you. I guess the new Plex version added support for the broken driver or something.
