PMS opens and shuts immediately on Mac OSX

PMS was working fine last night, but today Plex stopped working completly. When I click the icon, it opens up and shuts down right away. I deleted and tried installing a fresh version and the same thing happens.

Running 10.15.3

I updated to the latest OS beta (10.15.4) and still having can’t get Plex to open up.

How do I find error logs if i can’t get the application to open?

[Plagiarizing myself with a shameless copy/paste]

This could be caused by several things, but fairly high on the list is a corrupt database. You can pretty easily check this by forcing PMS to create a new one. Try renaming your Plex data folder (temporarily) so that a new one will be created. For example, rename:

/Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
to:
/Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server.bak

Then try to start PMS. If it works, you can move your old directory back (you’ll have to delete the newly-created one, make sure to stop PMS first) and try to repair/restore you database. These two support articles cover that:

Well, that works to load it but nothing shows up. I can’t seem to restore/repair my old library.

oh well. I’ll just start fresh, I guess.

That second link I provided is the procedure for restoring a backup. Try picking your oldest one and restoring it. Or do a repair on the oldest one. It’s rare that a database is so far gone that it cannot be repaired.

I dont understand how to do it.

Like, I copied and pasted the file to the newly created database and it does nothing

My suggestions above were in two parts. The first was a test to see if the cause of the problem was a corrupted database. The second was how to recover from it. Since it looks like a corrupt database, the first step is to move your old directory back. That is, delete or rename the newly created Plex Media Server folder and then rename the original one back. So, if you followed the suggestions above, you should currently have the following in your Application Support folder:

Plex Media Server
Plex Media Server.bak

The first is the pristine new copy, the second is the old version. So:

  1. Rename Plex Media Server to Plex Media Server.new.
  2. Then rename Plex Media Server.bak to Plex Media Server.

This will get you back to the original state where things were not working. Now, follow the directions above to first try to repair the database. If that doesn’t work, try restoring a backup. Follow the directions in the provided links exactly.

If none of that works then yes, you’ll need to rebuild your libraries from scratch.

Well, I have no backups from 2020…I guess Plex just stopped doing that. I restored from one from a . year ago but that servers zero purpose.

Great

Sorry to hear that. It won’t help you now, but make sure you have the following option selected in your settings:

Settings → Scheduled Tasks → Backup database every three days

If you already had that selected then I’m not sure why Plex would stop doing the backups.

Since your server is on a Mac, do you do Time Machine backups? If so, you could see if you have a more recent database there…

It IS selected, however the last 3 I had had “blob” has extensions. The last “real” one was froma . year prior.

I created a brand new folder and drag/dropped it into the “backup” box so going forward it should go there. Can I manually force it to run right now?

Manually force what to run right now? As far as I know you cannot force PMS to back up its database; you can do that by stopping PMS and manually copying the database file somewhere. As for Time Machine, you can force it to do a backup by clicking it in the menu bar and selecting “Back Up Now.”
