PMS reverts to Indirect connection

Synology DS1019+
DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 6
PMS Version 1.19.3.2793

My PMS keeps reverting to Indirect streaming. It will stream remotely as Direct Play for a while and when I stop watching for an hour or two and come back it will be Indirect as evidenced by checking the Dashboard in my web browser.

It also flips back and forth from Remote Access being fully accessible to not being accessible, yet streaming is still working, just indirectly. I have checked that the appropriate ports are forwarded on the router.

I also ran into a strange issue where attempting to set a manual external port and pressing “Retry” would kill the server and I would have to go into DSM, stop PMS, and restart PMS to get it to work again.

I have included the latest logs, which as of right this second, I am able to stream directly, but 30 minutes ago my TV was streaming as Indirect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, I’ve made the change and will post if I have any issues.

I turned on the TV this morning, opened Plex, it says my PMS “is Currently Unavailable”. Connecting directly to the NAS/PMS shows that it is running and I can stream in my browser, just not remotely. Remote Access also shows not available outside your network.

I will try a few things to see if I can get it working again.

Clicking “Retry” on the Remote Access settings page did not work.
Disabling Remote Connection and re-enabling it seems to have worked.
Remote Access shows “Fully accessible outside your network”
TV is showing all of my content.
Here are the logs from after I disabled and re-enabled.

That’s really strange, the box is unchecked and I haven’t re-enabled it since yesterday.

https://plex.tv/web if I am using the browser normally
or the synology DDNS address if I am having issues with remote connection
username.synology.me:32400
The TV uses the Plex app from the content store so I assume it uses https://plex.tv/web

I followed the instruction on https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288586-installation/ and How to Set Up an SSH Tunnel With PuTTY - GoDaddy Blog, but when I got to this step:

Type http://localhost:8888/web into the address bar

I get:

The NAS is located on a Verizon Fios network with a Verizon Fios modem/router. The router interface is not the most user-friendly, but I’ll try to find a way to allow the private domain through. If you have any links on how to do it I’d appreciate it.

As far as the settings go, I can take a trip and get on the NAS’s local network. Is there anything special I should do? Should I re-check and then uncheck the Relay option again to get it to save?

Turned on the TV this morning and the TV says PMS is “currently unavailable”.
If I visit https://app.plex.tv/desktop, it says “Unable to connect to “PMS” securely.”
If I visit username.synology.me:32400, it shows the server and all of its content.
This leads me to believe that using my NAS’s DDNS address to connect is essentially the same as being on the local network. I’m unsure as to what is causing Remote Access to be disabled every night. I’ve included the logs.

Disabling and re-enabling Remote Access did not fix the problem visually, as it still showed Not available outside your network, until I refreshed the page.
Now it says Fully accessible outside your network and I can access my content on the TV and https://app.plex.tv/desktop. One weird thing is, it shows unknown IPs:

Side note: if anyone knows how to let private domains through Verizon’s modem/router please let me know, I searched various forums for an hour yesterday and went through every router setting I could find, but I wasn’t able to do anything other than change my DNS servers.

I may have found a solution, I’ll post back tomorrow if it’s working.

That is true, but in practice, I am able to do things with DDNS that I should not be able to do.
For example, it allows me to access my PMS remotely even if I disable Remote Access and do not have an SSH Tunnel running.

I’m not sure why, but this corrected itself after I fiddled with it. Hopefully it remains stable overnight.

Yes, https://www.verizon.com/about/sites/default/files/fios-qgr-userguide140925.pdf unfortunately it wasn’t very helpful. I have a good feeling that I won’t have this issue tomorrow morning. I’ll post what I did if it works. I appreciate your help so far.

I’m happy to report that I did not have any issues this morning. I’ve narrowed it down to the Verizon Fios G1100 modem/router, which has a “feature” that clears unused UPnP ports after a certain amount of time. It seems this cutoff is relatively short, less than 12 hours. I thought I had forwarded the port correctly, if I had, it would have saved me a lot of headaches. I would suggest turning UPnP off for increased security, but it isn’t necessary, see below.

If anyone reading this has a Verizon Fios G1100 modem/router, and is not familiar with the interface, this is how you properly forward the port for Plex:

  1. Log in to your router/modem at http://myfiosgateway.com/ or 192.168.1.1
  2. Go to Firewall > click Yes to the Warning > Port Forwarding
  3. Delete any existing UPnP port forwarding rule that Plex has created.
  4. Select your NAS, PMS, etc. from the Select IP from menu drop-down.
  5. From the Application To Forward drop-down, choose Custom Ports.
  6. Click on Advanced >> to the right of Add + Reset > Cancel >
  7. Leave the Protocol as TCP.
  8. Leave Source Ports as Any.
  9. From the Destination Ports drop-down, choose Specify .
  10. Enter your Manually specified Plex public port in the box that appears.
  11. From the Forward to Port drop-down, choose Specify .
  12. Enter 32400 in the box that appears.
  13. Leave Schedule as Always.
  14. Click Add +.

Your public Plex port should now be manually forwarded.

This guide assumes you’ve already reserved a static IP for your NAS/PMS.
If you haven’t, here is a quick step-by-step on how to do it on a G1100:

  1. Log in to your router/modem at http://myfiosgateway.com/ or 192.168.1.1
  2. Go to Advanced>IP Address Distribution>Connection List >
  3. Find your device and click Edit.
  4. Tick the box that says Static Lease Type and hit Apply.

@trumpy81 Thanks for sticking with me and offering suggestions.

Hi, I am having an issue where playback on my LAN activity is sometimes being detected as WAN activity and gobbling up my bandwidth on a massive scale. I already have “Treat WAN IP As LAN Bandwidth” turned OFF which was causing this issue before, should I turn off the “Enable Relay” switch too? Yesterday my Local Plex usage was detected by my Cox “Panoramic” Modem as 500gb of WAN usage when it should have been all local usage. And I had never seen the Relay switch previously, I don’t know how long that feature has been in Plex. Will shutting off the relay help? This looked like the only discussion that was even slightly related to my question.
