Wow thanks for all the likes guys. Just got "Popular"!
+1 for this idea! I would give it +1000 if that was possible... :-)
It would also be great if it was possible to specify the collection name in a file stored alongside the media (something parallel to .plexignore, maybe .plexdata?). Every once in a while, I end up re-scanning my library for one reason or another, and re-creating all of the collections manually is painful enough that I don't bother anymore, which limits how much benefit I'm getting out of this feature.
In addition to having the .plexdata file (or whatever) specify the collection name, it would also be great if this were inherited hierarchically, to take advantage of folder hierarchies like:
Movies/
Harry Potter/
.plexdata <== specifies collection name
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets/
... etc.
Again, just an idea...having to specify the collection name only once would reduce the maintenance effort.
And finally, if this were all added, it would also be great if the .plexdata file (or whatever) supported multiple collection names in the same file. For example, the Iron Man series of movies would belong to two collections: "Iron Man" and "Marvel Cinematic Universe".
Definitely a +1 for me. This would be a excellent feature for Plex.
I like the idea, just wondering how this would be different than making a smart playlist?
+1
Hope we can get more votes to try and push this to towards the top of the list!

I'd like to think of it as a feature that isn't necessarily bounded/limited to the playback aspect. The main goal is to gather related media into one collection so that it gives the user more comprehensive browsing experience as well as viewing experience. This inevitably means it will require some playlist feature as part of it (as I have mocked up).
Edit: Thanks for everyone who's liked/+1d the idea!

This is a great idea, but i would like to go one step further and suggest that Plex automatically add the collection meta-data to the folders on demand. It would also be cool if Plex could create links to the original content if they are in a diffrent folder / collection.
On a similar vein, i believe that similar to how, when you've watched Episode 1 of a TV show, episode 2 will show on deck, the next movie in a collection should show on deck too as unwatched (Or at the very least in the 'discover' tab on most of the new apps, have a 'Continue watching' bit with the next movie from a collection)
This would make watching movies in sequence nice and easy, and also show you the next movie in a collection that you might not have known about or forgotten to watch
+1 for me
Love the Mockups and idea
This would make Plex perfect for me
That would be nice.
Having started to use AndroidTV I was going to make a comment about how collections are basically non used and how I'd like something done about it. I mean when you select a movie with the AndroidTV interface, it lists things like other movies in the same genre. So listing 'Other Movies in Collection would be pretty useful.
I tracked this before becoming a member, but I would LOVE to get this feature
For the record I am upvoting merely because any COLLECTION system implemented would be a good thing compared to the filter method.
But I truly would prefer that Collections would flatten in whatever category they show up in.
I don't need to see boxcovers for all 6 (or now 7) Star Wars movies while looking through the library. Once that when clicked on shows all the movies in that collection will do just fine and clean up a major mess in the library display!
Plex Team, having a collection system overhaul would not only suit me but many others where we don't want to see multiple boxcovers of movies belonging to the same franchise showing up in Movies library by cleaning it up and grouping the movies that belong to the same franchise under one collection.
For me, I have 22 (going onto 23) James Bond movies boxcovers in my Movies library and if they can all be grouped under the James Bond Collection then my movies library will look much cleaner.
Also having like the James Bond movies grouped in the James Bond Collection will allow me to watch the James Bond movies in sequence without spending time finding them in the movies library.
I know that I can do a playlist and put them in order inside of the playlist but that still leaves me with all of the James Bond boxcovers showing up in my main movies library,
It seems like to me, that Plex currently uses the term "Collections" more like a tag or playlist. I wouldn't be opposed to this, exactly, if enabling the collection view wouldn't filter out everything else that I have on the list like it currently does.
This is one area that both Kodi (Formerly XBMC) and Emby (Formerly Media Browser 3) do this feature rather well, and that Plex is a little behind on.
Bump
+1 for this, great mockups. I'd love to see collections become more than a filter.
This and device agnostic subtitle support are the MAIN two things that keep me running XBMC and not just using Plex for all my media needs.
+1 for this, great mockups. I'd love to see collections become more than a filter.
+1 here also...in all other applications (kodi, Emby) Collections are views and not filters ...so why not plex...
YES!!!!! This is the only feature I miss from XBMC. Would be awesome to stack movies so they aren't individually shown in the library (i.e., all the Saw films).
