Server Version#: 1.16.0.1226
Player Version#: 2.0009 (Samsung F-Series TV) Plex Media Server.log (212.0 KB)
Hello,
I have a Synology DS218+ where I have installed a Plex Media Server.
Plex seems to have a problem playing portrait videos taken from a Galaxy S7 Edge.
While landscape videos from the same device play just fine, those in portrait mode take a long time to start and then they keep buffering every couple of seconds. The video is shown as it was taken from the device, it’s not stretched or anything else, but it’s unwatchable with the constant buffering.
I enabled verbose logs to check the speed of the the transcoding, as instructed in the FAQ and I have attached the logs from server.
Note that the videos are in mp4 format “H264 1080 17Mbps” or “H264 4K 17Mbps”.
Does anyone have an idea why this happens?
Any suggestions on what to change in the configuration that might help ?
I followed your instruction, played a file (20190220_105528.mp4) for a couple of minutes.
It took a few seconds to start and then it was constantly buffering.
I have attached the logs and the xml from the GetInfo of that file.
Thanks for helping me on this. getinfo.zip (1.2 KB) Plex Media Server Logs_2019-06-23_14-48-44.zip (4.0 MB)
Thank you for the analysis.
Indeed the CPU goes to full load when playing that file.
But I don’t understand where those restrictions come from.
Both TV and Synology are connected via Ethernet and I haven’t found any settings (in client or server) that limits the bandwidth. So why the logs report a limit of 10000kbps ? Have I missed something in the settings?
In addition, what is this profile that allows only AC3? Is it a Plex profile? Can it be changed?
I have also tried another file, MP4 H264 720p 12Mbps, that shows the same problem.
But that file I can play it from the TV’s player (via USB) just fine!
Why is Plex having so much problems with it? I think the CPU is quite capable of playing that file.
Well I purchased the Plex Pass and enabled the Hardware Acceleration.
Some videos now are played properly, mainly the ones will the low bit-rate.
Others with higher bit-rate still have buffering problems.
Is there any other configuration option available now with the pass that could help further?
Hi,
I updated the Plex server to the latest version and I played three videos with different results.
The first one (file getInfo1.xml) is a landscape video (MP4 H264 1080 17Mbps) that plays fine!
The second one (file getInfo2.xml) is a portrait video (MP4 H264 4K 48Mbps) having same buffering problems as before the hardware acceleration.
The third one (file getInfo3.xml) is also a portrait video (MP4 H264 1080 17Mbps) that initially played fine but then a network error occurred this time! Usually I see small buffering with this one.
I hope you find some answers in the logs!
Thank you. GetInfos.zip (3.5 KB) Plex Media Server Logs_2019-07-20_14-43-25.zip (2.9 MB)
That sums it up for the videos recognized as 4K and it makes sense.
What about those that are 1080p? Your analysis are for those too?
The third video I played 20190521_174211.mp4 (seen in getInfo3.xml) caused a network error, which seems to happen a lot lately for such videos. Is the root cause of that network error visible in the logs?
You also mention:
and in the logs it seems that a limit of 10Mbps is set for the bandwidth. But everything is wired so it should be 100Mbps! Where does Plex reads that limit from? Did the client set it and for what reason? I can’t find any setting for that!
