I have both the WD PR4100 NAS and the Netgear R9000 router. Which location should I use for the server software?
Without more information it would be hard to say but the lesser of two evils is the NAS.
To make a more informed decision, what and how many clients. Network topology and probably most important can you play all your media without transcoding.
