Pre-Roll Video (Force request)

Bump.

I think as the admin I should have a forced pre-roll as an option. Then to each their own. It would be useful for giving update notices, messages, etc. I myself don’t like trailers and such - but I would love to force a pre-roll to the client apps. (DLNA I don’t care about).

+1 I agree completely. If not forced preroll then at least a ticker news bar: so i can warn my friends that server maintenance will be preformed etc…

Not just the option to turn on preroll for users, but also an option to choose what library that preroll is coming from.

Right now it looks like preroll only works if the media exists in the same library containing the media the user is trying to access, which is a bit silly considering most people will naturally create a separately library for stuff like preroll and such.

You should be able to create a separate library called admin, or preroll, whatever… hide it from users, but still be able to pull media from that to show before movies in a different library.

Glad to see this is still getting interest. I’d love to have the feature and would then get to work on a custom pre-roll video. It’d only be like 5-10 seconds.

It used to be, at least with the Web and Roku apps, that the user could turn off trailers, but not the pre-roll, and I think that functionality should be restored for all apps. I wouldn’t mind if they don’t want to watch movie trailers, but if I have something I need them to see, then I should be able to make them see it.

I agree with @cayars
My 14 users do not pay for me sharing my library with them. Nor do they offer to chip in when I replace a drive or pay my yearly dues for services such as Plex, UseNet etc. But they damn sure some out of the woodwork when the server goes down and they can’t connect.

I am the admin. I am the owner. I am a benevolent operator, and I cover all costs, and I maintain content, and if I wish to pre roll a 20 second clip before a movie is played, I sure as hell wouldn’t be feeling “benevolent” anymore if my clients were “furious” as one commenter said theirs would be. They can go pay for their own Netflix, Hulu, HBO etc to achieve less content than they have here, and my bandwidth will rejoice in their wake.

Nice to see there is still some interest in this.

This is one recurring request I still scratch my head about given the near-universal availability of e-mail, text groups, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

It’s because Plex gave us a cool feature that is turned off by default in the clients and we as server admins have no control over turning this back on. Had they at least defaulted to this feature being on then it would do nothing unless the server admin had the pre-roll setup so effectively would still be “off” until the server admin choose to use it.

See the issue?

The issue as described here seems to be the time/effort some people want to invest to instill functionality in PMS that would seem could be handled better, today, using tools already at hand - assuming the goal is simply pass along some tidbits of information to someone who happens to watch something.

I don’t know how to react to an assertion along the lines of “you’ll watch it the way I want you to watch it”. I mean, come on, it’s a movie.

Not everybody checks email, uses twitter or facebook.

But if they use your plex server then you know they get the message. Personally, I don’t want to have to use 3 or 4 other avenues to get a message out, nor do I want it posted “publicly” where others would see it either since then others will ask about Plex and want access.

The functionality is 99% done but not under admin control. It’s a rather simple change that give much more functionality for those wanting to use it. For those not wanting to use then nothing is lost.

Seems rather simple. Think about it this way. Plex took the time to add the feature but how many people actually ever use it in it’s present state? I would doubt less than 1 in 500 servers (being kind).

It’s just not functional in it’s default implementation.

I concede a simple “message of the day” displayed at Plex server access would be useful in certain cases assuming people connect in a timely manner.

A group text message has the added benefit of being able to actually warn when the server is going to be down regardless of anyone’s viewing habits or if PMS has gone down and you’re working on it. (I do muse about the postings asking for PMS to be able to display an informative message when it’s down like they expect an e-mail informing them when e-mail isn’t working.)

I know there are people who can’t get texts but I don’t think know any myself. Someone who can watch Plex across the Internet but has no smartphone seems an unlikely combination.

I only share my server with my family and a small number of close friends.
For a long time I am using plexEmail once every Friday. because Plex defaults are too restrictive and causing lots of media to be transcoded, I added a small text to all outgoing emails send by plexEmail with details on how to setup their devices for best experience and no transcoding.
With this occasion, I discovered that even in 2017 most users don’t read their emails.
So I turned to pre roll option, only to discover, yet again, that Plex defaults are plain stupid.
Please, fix this already.

Plex knows best. They’re trying to be Apple.

any news regarding this request

Any more news on this feature? I would love to be able to get a message to my users in this way!

And yeah, i completely agree with JakeReindl. My users don’t pay ■■■■ either, and i do want i want with my servers and content.

Bump! I would like this feature also!

We really need it, bump

i want this option

I think that this would be a nice feature to have. Some suggestions would be to have the pre roll optimized for several levels of playback, and to play the preroll while the selected video is buffering. This would be a nice way of allowing the admin to insert a loading screen, or some useful message. The user would also have the option to skip.

This needs to be added. Also, everyone on this post should thumb up the OP!
