Prerolls Quit Working

Plex Preroll has mysteriously quit working. No attempts on my end to get them reworking again have been successful.

Server Version#: Version 1.23.4.4712
Player Version#:
Plex Media Server Logs_2021-06-29_17-20-16.zip (2.6 MB)

Have you set the “Cinema trailers to play before movies” to “None?” Pre-rolls will only play if that setting is 1 or more.

I believe it’s enabled?

In Plex Web, the setting is in the “Player” section:

Hmm you’re right that had changed. However when setting to one it now just played “Peter Rabbit Runaway” (lol) as an outside trailer. I want it to play trailers from my directory. Also, trailers (my personal pre roll ones) are not playing on any clients like Apple TV etc.

Turning off cinema trailers in Edit Library turns off those annoying outside trailers, but setting to “1” in the Player section like you showed still doesn’t play my prerolls.

The “trailers to play” setting is per-client, so the setting in Plex Web only affects Plex Web. There’s a version of that setting that you have to set on each client. I’m not familiar with the Apple TV’s interface. On Android TV, it’s in Settings > Experience.

OK, that said:

  1. It was all working everywhere until recently.
  2. I thought prerolls could be forced.
  3. setting to “1” in plex web still doesn’t give me prerolls in plex web
  4. would hope e.g. that if trailers to play is set to “2” it wouldn’t play two prerolls!
  1. Pre-rolls can’t be forced. It makes no sense that they can’t, but they can’t.

  2. My pre-rolls work, so something’s causing this. Are you certain of the path you have in the pre-roll field? Any ad blockers or script blockers running?

  3. The only way Plex will play more than one pre-roll is if you include the paths to several pre-rolls, separated by commas, in the ‘Movie pre-roll video’ field (see the text below the field).

No, no ad blockers etc. Totally “clean” machine.

I am showing in these examples a very simple example to just one preroll in my C: drive. I have a collection of 205 prerolls, which are nice, and were all working until recently. I have tried multiple preroll folder locations in different drives, mapped drives, etc. All to no avail. Simply refuse to play/work.

Hopefully someone else will have an idea. I can’t think what it might be. Good luck!

Same here since latest plex media server update all my preroll are not playing anymore.

nothing change on my side settings etc.

I am seeing the same issue, my pre-rolls were working before the latest update to ( Version 1.23.4.4712). I didn’t have to have trailers enabled before, but in order for them to play now, I have to set the value to at least 1 on the client. I did see another thread where they were discussing this, hopefully it will get fixed soon. I guess we will see. Its a shame because I use that space for different announcements and I have quite a few people in my family I share with so its not practical to have everyone update thier client, they aren’t all that technical either.

btw dumb question. I can uninstall PMS and reinstall an old version on Windows 10 and not bork the library settings etc right? I don’t think I’ve ever downgraded before but it appears a downgrade will fix the prerolls.

While I can’t speak to the “official process”, I can tell you that I backed up my plex media server folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server), then I shutdown plex. I uninstalled Plex Media server from the programs&Features menu, then went and installed the latest public release of “PlexMediaServer-1.23.3.4707-ebb5fe9f3-x86.exe” into the same path (it defaults there) and when it completed, I went back into Plex and everything was working fine. My libraries, settings, etc all appear to be in tact.

This folder only contains the program files of plex but not your library data. And you are overwriting its contents anyway by installing a different program version. So backing it up is not useful.

If you wanted to make a backup of your Plex data, you better follow this article: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201539237-backing-up-plex-media-server-data/

Rolling back the version of Plex server on Windows works as follows:
0) note down your current Plex Server software version

  1. Stop Plex Server using its tray icon.
  2. uninstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows. Do not use 3rd party ‘uninstaller’ software like Revo etc. Do not use Registry cleaners/optimizers.
  3. go to your Plex data folder.
There is a subfolder in there, named Updates which will contain previous versions of the installer .exe
  4. execute the installer for the previous software version
  5. reboot Windows (just a safety measure, it may work without rebooting as well)

Thanks for the clarification, I had backed up that directory in case the downgrade hosed up accessing my plexdata (which yes, is pathed differently), I should have clarified that point better. At any rate, thanks for providing the “official” process and my pre-roll is once again operational. Hopefully the developers will correct the bug before it makes it to the public channel, for now, I have disabled beta updates in my PMS configuration.

I haven’t had them working for a few months now, keep getting a error saying that the items couldn’t be added to the play queue, so I just stopped using them for now

Prerolls not working anymore
 known issue?

For me, this method of downgrading did not work. Yes, I found the previous versions. Yes, I installed one. Plex would not even work.

So I had to revert to my own personal library.

I went way back. Version 1.20.0.3181.

Prerolls still do not work.

@OttoKerner, again, is this a known issue? Are pre rolls now known to be non functional? I find it very weird a very old PMS did not let prerolls work.

It is working for me
 however:

Why oh why do pre-rolls run for the Videos category? It doesn’t for TV, the description of the feature is for Movies, but it runs the pre-roll before every single item in the Video category for some reason.
