I’ve started to used the method mentioned above, where I have added a new “Mood” tag called “Duplicate”. I add this Mood Tag to all the duplicate tracks (generally in the Best Of albums), and then I EDITED each of the smart playlists to exclude tracks that are tagged “Duplicate”. This has worked well for me. Thanks for the tip.
The problem is I don’t want to have to create a work around. I just want to be able to rate a track and know that it’s only being applied to that version from that album/single without it applying to a version from a different source.
It’s the only thing that really irritates me on Plex. It’s a great media sever and I’m really liking Plexamp, it’s just this stupid rating issue lets it down.
I really hope it can be fixed in a future update.
This issue is driving me mad! Such a simple thing rating a specific track. Don’t want that rating on any other track!! Simple!
I’ve been living with this issue for a while, but I went looking to see if there was any official acknowledgement. Seems to be none yet. I would appreciate duplicate tracks having independent ratings and metadata for the use of smart playlists.
I hope a dev will be able to comment if this is something they are interested in or if this won’t change.
Edit: An alternative I thought of, is if a smart filter could have the option “remove duplicates.”
Hey guys,
Any news on this?
Still not. If anyone can’t use Plex for music due to this problem: try Musicbee. Well, it’s not a client server software, but has tons of features and doesn’t have this problem.
Together with goneMadMusic Player on Android which can r/w tags and ratings, it’s quite nice, even though some manual efforts are needed. Also both r/w m3u playlists. No vendor lockin.
Any progress? In my case the songs are even of different lengths, though only 5:35 -vs- 5:39 from different albums, neither being a greatest hits album so it is really annoying that I can’t keep the ratings different.
It is ESPECIALLY annoying that I’m trying to keep my iTunes and Plex in sync with occasionally pulling playlists from iTunes where these songs CAN be rated differently – then it appears to be a crap shoot which of the two ratings gets applied to both of the songs. Sigh…
Why do I want to keep both iTunes and Plex? Well, crap like this in Plex is the main reason I can’t fully commit to trusting plex.

I can’t believe the devs haven’t even acknowledge this issue after well over a year.
Creating smart playlists with this bug is a major annoyance, and using a complicated workaround shouldn’t be the solution…
I finally had enough of the situation, and didn’t really want to manually apply a mood to all duplicate songs in a playlist, so I’ve created this Python script (PlexSmartPlaylistDeduplicator) to automatically add the mood “Duplicate” on any found duplicates in a given playlist. This doesn’t fix the issue, but is an easier workaround for now until some staff get around to working on it.
As of now, you can’t select which of the copies of a song you wish to keep on the playlist, as I find that not nearly as important.
I started using ratings on some of my songs because I wanted to create “favorites” smart playlists for some artists/genres/etc and ran into this issue (bug?). Now I have 2-3 versions/copies of various songs that are from different albums on my playlist and it is pretty annoying. It causes those songs to come up much more often than songs that might only be in one album (and thus I only have one copy of).
Bumping in hopes that they’ll address this before I’ve spent too much time rating things.
I haven’t thoroughly tested it but it also updates play history for these songs. So if you build your playlist with “Track Last Played” “in not the last” so many days, it shouldn’t re-add that song to the playlist.
So many issue in the app by not relating info to the unique id in the database. Smart playlists and sync are affected as many other metadata issues reported.
I really would like to see Plex address this. I don’t need to fill my phone with 3 versions of the same song because I gave one version 4 stars, plex made them all 4 stars, and then my 4 stars smart playlist adds all 3 copies.
This should be the next Plex Amp feature for sure!
