Problems with adding music videos

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554

Hi,
Having read loads of articles regarding the adding of music videos, and then adding said videos, I find that Plex is useless at this. All I want is to have, in PLEX, is a view of a poster, like in movies or tv, on which I can click or tap, and thus open to show thumbs of videos for that artist.
At moment all PLEX does is to extract each video individually to the dashboard, ignores the posters and thumbs which are included in the video folder, and throws up it’s own haphazard thumb extractions.
The closest I have come to getting what I want is by adding them as TV series & episodes, however this looks very ugly, and also messes up the view of the TV library.
Is it not possible for PLEX to to have the ability to add music videos like is done in EMBY? [Artist—>Video. Simple.
I want a global video library, but at the moment PLEX just isn’t capable.
I have both PLEX and EMBY and am trying to decide which to keep.
Do I keep EMBY because of it’s looks and simplicity, or do I keep PLEX for it’s ease of connecting to NAS, and for Tidal?
Regards,

Simply create a second “tv show”-type library.
You just need to tell Plex that it shall not go out and try to find any metadata for your videos, because they are not listed in any metadata source for tv shows.
You do that by editing the special “Music Videos” library and setting the Agent to “Personal Media Shows”

You can supply your own posters for both
Artists (TV Show)
Albums (Seasons)
Videos (Episode)
by following the instructions for local assets for TV shows:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220717-local-media-assets-tv-shows/

I’ve all ready tried that method and I must say that it looks terrible, not only that, there is not really a means of distinguishing new additions when adding both tv and music videos. Do I really need to add episodes to a collection of music videos, when surely just the title of the video should suffice?
Surely in this day and age it is possible to set up music videos that show artist then video, without faffing about with TV collections and episodes. Is it too much to ask? Everything else in PLEX works excellently, so why not music videos?

Looking thru the forums this appears to be what other users are also wanting. A simple way to add music videos.

You could also include all your music videos with your music. Then clicking on an artist will give you the option to view their music or their videos.

Thanks for your interest, but that’s not going to work, and doesn’t [I’ve tried]. All this does is rescan my entire music library, which is over 800 album artists over 5600+ albums. 95% of my music videos are not included in the music library.
As lots of peoples are asking, can’t we just have a means to create a music video library where there is a main view of the artist, when clicked opens all the tracks of that artist, just like a cd album. There is no need to link the videos to agents as nearly all own music videos won’t be there anyway

Not sure what you tried, but as you can see from my screenshot, it is possible. To be clear, that is using the Global Music Video folder option.

Plex doesn’t currently have a 2 level library like this. Current options I see are

  • include them as other videos, then use collections to group them by artists
  • if you don’t care for metadata, you could use a photo library
  • use a tv show library with the option to flatten shows with 1 season, but you will need to name your files with either the SxEy format or adding a fake date all in the same year

OK, I’ll try your suggestions and let you know how I get on. Might take a couple of days though.
The reason for being so pernickitty is that I subsscribe to Tidal, anf this does a wonderful integration of my music files, and I would like to have tidal do the same with my music videos, but so far the thing I’ve tried don’t seem to work. BTW, Tidal is far better than Spotify

Thanks

Adding video to your music library will give you the same experience as when using Tidal in Plex.

I realise that, but that would mean finding the appropriate tracks in Music and renaming all my videos, and the then what about the artists who I have no music for but have a video? Every time I have tried to add videos to music PLEX wants to scan ALL music, and that takes forever, 2 days when I originally added my music library, and that was only reading tags etc from music in their folders. I don’t want to use online sources as I spent over 6 months tagging all my music [using mp3tag, with agents musicbrainz and discogs]. It also means that I’d have to place the video into the music folder for the artist concerned, and this would entail copying said video resulting in duplicates. I prefer a seperate folder for videos, but by duplicating I use up an extra 40-50GB of HDD space
However I’ll give another go and let you know at some point the outcome. In meantime you keep working on developing a flat way of adding music videos. Thanks

Use the global music video folder option.

That is a limitation. Throw in a fake music file.

I have tried adding music videos (mp4) into the same directory as their respective artist and they are not showing up in the web app like it did for @anon18523487, Was there anything else I needed to do to make them show up correctly?

Refresh Metadata on the artist.

You need to add the video in the folder with the album, not the artist.

I tried that already.

After letting it sit overnight it appears to have refreshed automatically. Odd. At any rate, it’s now showing up, thanks!
