Processor advice for on the fly transcoding

I have a lot of BR I have converted to MKV format.  all 1080p between 10-20Mbit/sec.   It isn't unheard of to have 4 different movies going in this house at once.   Some converted to iPad/iPhone.  So my question is what CPU is my best option for being able to transcode 4 1080p streams at once?   

 

Other forums have said 3-4 streams with no issue on the Intel Avoton Octa, however with a passmark of only 3700 I am finding this hard to believe.  What are people finding to be the best processor for this number of live streams?

You will need a CPU with a passmark around 7500-8000 to support really high bitrate 1080P video files if you want to transcode all 4. The passmark needed goes down as the bitrate and resolution goes down.

The reason someone says that 3700 is enough for 4 transcoded movies is because at least 2 of the 4 are not transcoded (if the movies were high bitrate). They are either Direct Played or Direct Streamed (remuxed).

Yeah on the FreeNAS forums people haven’t had the best luck with the Avotons and heavy transcoding. Best to stick with a traditional powerhouse CPU.

I did a lot of research into this when I was building my box, as there was an Avoton version of my board available. I ultimately opted against it.
