Really high load, assuming this isn't normal but why?

Two streams, both transcoding but I have an eight core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz machine and the rest of the system is idle. They both are transcoding under 1 so they keep stopping and buffering. Any thoughts as to why this is so high for only two streams?

So, once the one stream was over the load shot back down to single (1-3) digits. This CPU should be able to handle multiple streams so I’m thinking something else is up. Any ideas?

Cam you post the xml for the 2 streams you are trying to transcode? If they are 30 Mbps blu-ray rips or hevc video, even your cpu may have trouble.

Both 1080p, I still find it strange that my cpu couldn’t handle it. With one the load is really low <2 but with 2 forget it.

According to this: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201774043-What-kind-of-CPU-do-I-need-for-my-Server-

My CPU should be able to handle ~4 1080p streams…it can’t do two.

I’ve been reading threads and maybe it’s not CPU but it’s something else, maybe disk?

@detz Please note that just because the source is 1080p does not mean all 1080p videos are equal. The article you linked uses 1080p@10Mbps assumed bitrate source and transcoding it a 720p@5Mbps video for benchmarking purposes. If you take that same 1080p@10Mbps and transcode it down to 720p@1.5Mbps video it will use more than the 2000 passmark score estimate. Just because it’s a 1080p transcode does not mean it will fit into the estimated usage stated in the article which gives a rough estimate based on average usage.
Just as a side note the Planse movie you linked is a 1080p@16Mbps source (very good quality) and if it is being transcoded to a much smaller file size (ie, 500 Mbps Standard Def or low end 720p), it will take up far more cpu than what is given as an estimate in the linked article.

Your cpu should be able to handle transcoding those 2 files. Are you running PMS in a VM?

It’s running in a docker image so it shouldn’t be limited by that.
