Profanity Scanner

I didn't really know where to post this idea. Is there already something made or can if be made for plex server that a scanner scans the movies section and mute the profanity in the movies it would be cool if it could cache the intervals at which it should mute on the server or something. I thought it was a really good idea and i'd be willing to even pay for the feature or even help build it in any way I can. Any information would be helpful.

The profanity is in the audio portion of the file, and looks like all other audio as far as the computer is concerned. You'd need some sort of very fancy speech recognition to do that. The alternative would be to create files that list the minute/seconds/duration of profanity... but no one's done that. That would be difficult to do too, since so many movies have multiple versions, and muting things too early or too late is likely to result in some tender ears being assaulted. If someone were to create a database of those files though, maybe Plex would start using them. Or maybe not.

This topic has come up before on other forums. It's not going to happen, think the general consensus is that if you have movies with swearing in then don't watch them if it offends you, if you want it because of kids then watch the movies when the kids aren't around.

I support people watching movies in the way that pleases them, the idea that it shouldn't be done is silly. However, the technical challenges to make such a system work are formidable, and if those who desire it are unwilling to put the work into it to make it happen then no one else will.

What I would like to see is something like http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=169029 for plex.

A company called TV Guardian makes a box that will scan subtitles to mute DVD’s and cable TV during the offending word. That would make it a lot easier. If there was a script that would read the .SRT and then mute the audio for a second or two that would be perfect. I’m not a programmer, but I think it’s definitely possible.
