PS4 all Subtitles always force Transcode Video Stream

Server Version#: 1.23.5.4862-7000
Player Version#: 5.19.1 (PS4)

Ps4 App always force transcoding Video if Subtitles are activated. (Embedded, External and Online Subtitles) on MKV Files.

Audio Formats i tested AC3, DTS, DTS-HD MA, AAC
If subtitles activated Audio goes Direct Stream and Video Transcodes
If subtitles deactivated Audio goes Transcode and Video Direct Stream

On my slower DS218+ Synology NAS this cause Video buffering because Hardware to slow for Transcoding Video on 1080p.

On some other Players like PC i can turn on Subtitles and Plex Server won´t transcode the Video Stream…

I use Handbrake 1.3.3 for my MKV files with added Subtitles and set it to “Standard” for forced Subtitles, but i also tested external Subtitles with the same result.

I´ve tested all supported Subtitle Formats, no one Works without Transcoding

In PS4 Media Player itself SRT Subtitles works, but not in Plex.

I tested MKV x264 Files with SRT, ASS, SSA, SMI and VTT embedded and also external

All Subtitles forces the Video to transcode !

Plex Team please help with this issue, on PS5 the same Problem appears.

SRT subtitles are supported on PS4 only with videos that direct play (e.g. MP4 / H264 / AAC). If the video does not direct play initially before subtitles are enabled, then it will force a video transcode once subtitles are enabled.

I have tested SRT subtitles with H264 and AAC Sound.

With disabled SRT Subtitles Video Direct Plays, after enabling the SRT Subtitles it transcodes …

That´s my Problem

Can you provide the logs or a sample of the video that you’re trying with?

You can enable logs by going into settings > advanced > log to media server. After that play the MP4 / H264 / AAC video with SRT subtitles, then grab the PMS logs.

Info on how to create a sample file: Generating Sample Files from Media | Plex Support

Ah ok, MP4.

There is no chance to get SRT Subtitles working with MKV Files ?

With MP4 it works, but all my Files are MKV …

No, soft subtitle support only works with files that direct play on the PS4, which in this case is very limited (MP4 / H264 / AAC).
