QNAP Recommendation for Live TV Transcoding

Hello Everyone. My old QNAP 453A met an untimely death do to a water leak. I am in the market for a new QNAP but one that can handle the LiveTV (with Plex Pass) hardware transcoding, as my current one can not. I use a HD Home Run Prime as my tuner and I access Plex on Apple TVs and other iOS devices. My hope is to use it for LiveTV, TV DRV, and normal DVD/Blueray RIPs.

I have seen some info on the Plex and QNAP sites but nothing definitive as to doing LiveTV hardware transcoding and how many streams it can handle at a time. And how many recordings it can handle at a time, unless it can do the 3 max from my HD Home Run.

So, is anyone already doing LiveTV transcoding and recording with a Plex Pass and a QNAP? I only really need 4 hard drive bays. Thanks for your input!

I just got the NAS Compatibility List updated last month.

I think you’ll find it much more informative than the old. It includes hardware transcoding

The TS-453B is likely a good choice for you if you were otherwise happy with the 453A

Great, thanks. I must have missed the link for the spreadsheet. How would you compare the TS-453B to the TVS-471-i3? They both support hardware transcoding up to 1080p. Do you know how many streams of cable TV recording and live viewing they can handle from and HD HomeRun Prime?

Take the processor info and start comparing them at cpubenchmark.net

I went with the TVS-471-I3-4G. I have just started to record TV shows to it with Plex but it appears to be working so far.
