Has anyone had any experience with using the QNAP TS-869L and PMS? I can’t seem to find any documentation regarding trans-coding capabilities and the like. At this point, 1080p is my largest media. I typically have from 1-4 laptop users and 1-3 tablet users, but never more than 5 concurrent streams. I am currently utilizing a PC, but I would love to repurpose it and use the NAS. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I don’t believe you are going to be able to leverage that model for your use case. The CPU just isn’t new enough or beefy enough to really deal with any transcoding. Now if you all of your media/clients support direct play then it might be possible.
That model is pretty old though (went QTS end-of life this year) and will be going support EOL in 2020.
You potentially could use it as a storage source with say a Nvidia ShieldTV running Plex Server on it, but even then you could only handle 2 maybe 3 transcoding streams concurrently, but more if your clients support direct play for the formats you are using.
If you want 5 streams w/transcoding concurrently, you are going to need to go MUCH beefier than a TS-869L.
