QNAP, Synology or Asustor

Afternoon all I am looking to migrate from an Apple mini to more of an all in one NAS. Thankfully I have the hard drives currently and just looking to upgrade the NAS hardware.

I have been looking at the top “desktop” versions of each manufacturer and would like some advice / opinions on which one to go with. At most I would have 4 - 5 remote streams with 2 - 3 local streams. Of the possible 8 streams 5 concurrent streams might need transcoding. I also have an Nvidia Quadro P2200, 5GB, 4 DP (3930, xx20) I would like to use to handle the encoding if possible.

Thank you!

For Synology, the usual suggestion is the 1520+ (over the 920+ as the extra bay is worth while in the long run typically and otherwise the same).

It looks like Synology 21+ series changed CPU and isn’t as Plex friendly… which is why I’ve been looking at the QNAP TS-653(D/N) series (or TVS-672(N\XT) if I can afford it).

I have a Synology 218+ now and I’m okay but kinda want to upgrade to more bays in the nearish future. I’m more familiar with Synology since I’ve been using it for many years but QNAP seems to have a few additional flexibility options compared to Synology.

I’m not familiar with Asustor at all… but it looks like QNAP or Synology are currently better options unless I’m missing something outside of just the specs.

I’d be curious to hear other folks’ opinions as well.

Edit:

I’m not up on the processor support for hardware transcoding but this might help a bit.

Agree with @Insomnic_1 - go QNAP or Synology if possible. There is just more support for these brands. Not just for Plex, but other apps as well. I’m really happy with running PMS from my QNAP, but my particular model would not be able to handle that many streams.
