Qnap TVS-882

I’m hoping Plex Media Server won’t complain for a long while.

This will most likely be my final choice. It’s way better than WD PR4100 and I read in too many places Plex not working well with Synology NAS DiskStation DS916+. I’d love to hear what you guys think as well.

I will upgrade the 16GB ram to 64GB DDR4 2133 RAM MODULE LONG DIMM when Newegg has them on sale in the future.

Newegg says:

Default/ Max. Memory
Total DIMM slots: 4
Maximum memory: 32GB (8GB x 4)
Memory modules pre-installed: 16GB DDR4 RAM (8GB x 2)

but

QNAP says:

DDR4 2133 MHz memory

Supports four DDR4 memory modules for a maximum of 64GB RAM.

I think I’m gonna move ahead to buy it. I hope I’m making the right choice.

Hello
I have ds2415 and this 882
I have a plex server installed on both
I did several tests
By watching a movie with a very high bitrate on a tv and a pc at the same time, the syno could not read it while the qnap without any problem
The qnap is really fast for pkex.

My use is also professional, virtualization, docker, etc … the qnap has brought me a gain of power, synology now serves me as a backup server, and for plex as a secondary server

my model is 16go ram / core i5

It is a real bomb you will not regret it

The base TVS-882 has an i3-6100 CPU in it with about 5400+ passmarks. It’s a little faster than the CPU I have in my Asustor AS-7004T NAS, (at 5000+ passmarks.) I don’t think you will go wrong with this NAS, as long as you realize that it’s not going to be an outstanding 4K transcoder. Not many devices have native H265 support, so this codec will require transcoding, and the TVS-882 might not be able to keep up with it.

There are other CPU choices for that model as well, and they just get progressively faster…

Other than that, this looks to be an outstanding PMS machine. With a lot of room to grow your media library, as disk space is filled, just add another disk. When the bays are full, start going to externals. (This is what I’ve done, with over 30TB hanging on or in my NAS.)

Plex does not use very much memory so 16gb is more than enough. Honestly 8 would be just fine.
If there is an i7 version of the qnap then that would help when transcoding more than 2 videos.
