Question From a New-To-Plex Potential User...

I have a rather large DVD collection that I have been transferring to digital files (MP4). I tried installing Plex on my computer as well as adding it to my Roku device (connected to my TV) and was very fond of how well I could watch any of the digital files, I created, on my TV after uploading them into the Plex software on my computer. Then, I logged off of my computer and it wouldn’t play any of the videos on my TV (probably because my computer was logged off).

I know if I upload a video to YouTube, my computer could be completely turned off and the video would still play on my YouTube app (on the TV) due to it now being on the internet. So then I saw that you can upgrade to Plex Premium which has a feature called Cloud Sync that is described as follows: “Sync content from your library to supported cloud storage providers to enjoy even if your server is offline”.

Does anyone know what the limit in the Cloud Storage would be (capacity)? I am under the impression that if I went with Plex Premium, whatever I uploaded into the Plex software could then be synced to the Cloud, and then even if my computer is off, I would still be able to watch content on my TV that had been uploaded into the Plex software. Is that correct?

The reason I have even decided to try going the route of streaming my personal content to my TV is because my TV has a USB port that allows me to put digital files on a thumb drive and watch them right off of the drive. I’m assuming that if I went with a streaming option, I could get much more content to be available for viewing versus the capacity of the thumb drive.

Any answers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cloud Sync is only a supplement for a plex server.

It’s intended use case is if your home internet connection has a restricted ‘upload’ bandwidth. So you can share your cloud storage and users can stream from there instead.
There is no limit to the storage capacity of Cloud Sync, except the one of the cloud storage provider. Although, to be honest, it gets clumsy/slow to sync a whole library with a 4-digit number of movies or several thousands of songs.
Of course you can use the cloud storage in your own home too, but you’ll then be dependent on a working internet connection with sufficient bandwidth.
