I’m reading the document on how to migrate a Plex instance to another server and when it says “Quit/exit the Plex Media Server so that it is no longer running” what exactly does that mean? I don’t see any options in the settings to quit, exit or shutdown. Does it mean just close the browser tab? I also don’t see anything in my Windows services to shut down other than Plex Update Service.
In your systems tray exit/shutdown the plex icon:

Ahh thanks. So out of curiosity what is the Windows service named as I don’t see it in the list of services on my machine?
Plex doesn’t run as a service by default on Windows. That is something that needs to be setup if you want it. You would need to search either forums or Google for run plex as a service.

Wow, I’m actually surprised it doesn’t run as a service by default, guess I would’ve noticed if I didn’t always log back in when I restart. Why is this, doesn’t make sense that it doesn’t run as a service.
@shark2k is correct. The PLEX Server is a Startup App in Windows System settings once installed. Setting up as a service is possible and used to be a preferred setup for many a few years ago, but PLEX has come a long way since this was in vogue.
Kinda sucks actually and doesn’t make sense why they would change it.
Nothing has changed. Running as a system service has always been only possible by adding 3rd party tools. (And you’ll lose hardware decoding by doing so.)
