Random HEVC to x264 transcoding

Server Version#: 1.31.0.2254-43df1e6e
Player Version#: The latest Android Version

I have a MIBOX that can Direct Play HEVC files. Suddenly, it just randoms transcoding the files instead of just Direct Playing them.
The Video is being transcoded to x264 while the audio is direct broadcasted.

06-12 22:28:12.316 i: [MediaDecisionEngine] Analyzing media: 1920x1080 4253kbps (Container: mkv, Video: hevc, Audio: aac)
06-12 22:28:12.317 i: [MediaDecisionEngine] Unable to direct play; Direct Play was attempted but failed, fallen back to transcoding
[TranscodeFallbackBehaviour] Detected direct play failed, falling back to transcode (starting: true)
I am attaching the log that i can find with IP:port/logging from the MIBOX. I believe this log contains also at least one successful DirectPlay from the device so would be easy to find the problem. I couldn’t however find something.
Logging TV BOX.txt (4.3 MB)

Your log shows that your box didn’t like something about the audio track. It tried to play it but failed, so it asked PMS to remux the file and try again. This appears to work and is just a remux of the file so no transcoding involved. Does PMS actually say it’s transcoding?

Yes. I am using the Plex Windows Application to access the dashboard and it says

The file that plays
Plex for Android (TV)
Video 1080p (HEVC Main 10) - > Transcode to H264 1080p
Sound HE-AAC 5.1 → Direct Play
Subtitles → Language Subtitle
Username

It should be

The file that plays
Plex for Android (TV)
Video 1080p (HEVC Main 10) - > Direct Play
Sound HE-AAC 5.1 → Direct Play
Subtitles → Language Subtitle
Username

I can also confirm that transcoding is going on by checking the CPU graph and checking the services that my computer run. When transcoding is going on Plex Transcoder just dominates my PC resources. I can also see for the first time that is using both CPU/GPU and not only CPU because my GTX 760 can’t HEVC Transcoding(?) and also Transcoding is being done much faster than before.

The thing is that I bought this TV Box to save me the transcoding procedure and it worked brilliantly for like 3 months. Now something is broken either at my PC (Plex Media Server) or at the Android Player of the TV Box. I forced close and cleared Cache and I got some Direct Plays going on those days and also closed the HDMI Passthrough. I am just trying out random stuff to see what it can be.

For example right now that I am writing this message I have a Direct Play Session Going On

Next Episode is now Transcoding.

The issue is still there

Sorry, I thought I had responded before. I am seeing an issue in your log that I am seeing for several users. We are looking into the problem, but I don’t have any information yet.

Yeah I thought it maybe a more general problem with Android-TV app.

What I can give you us more information that could help is that my Android-TV box successfully plays one Direct-Play Session and after that the next file is going to Transcode.
If I force-close Plex Android-TV app and re-open it then it would go Direct Play as it should be. The episode ends and then the next episode again is going to transcode from HEVC to x264.

Also this can be happen to HEVC movies. Going from a Direct Play Session to a Transcoding to x264 session. For example, I direct play a HEVC movie stop it, then I go to another movie that is HEVC and the TV Box starts to transcode.

As for why my PC is now using the GPU for encoding is that the encoding is from HEVC to x264 and my GPU supports x264 encode but doesn’t support HEVC encode but the reality is that it goes from x265 to x264 so it was ‘a silly me’ question-situation-underrstanding of things.

And something else maybe relative. I downgraded my Nvidia Drivers after the BSOD that was reported (and confirmed to my system). Maybe a HDAudio driver stuck after the downgrade? To other users with nVidia too??!

Thanks for your time anyways.
Appreciate the work you guys are doing!

Searching and doing some tests again in my free time I found this post which is exactly the behaviour i get right now
