Hi guys
I have a RaspberryPi 3 and I like to used as Plex server, I read some post here about it.
I think is not a problem, but I have some question
I have most of my movies on h264 codec
I have a WD 4TB WD with a power adapter (USB 3) HFS+ formated.
Is possible to plug and use this drive direct attached to the Raspberry ? (with the HFS drivers of course)
I think to put a NAS software for raspberry to access and move file over wifi
The players are
a Rocku 4k (local in the same physical location)
and a PS4 remotely
Some times both players working at the same time.
If this scenario possible ??
Yes your setup with the Pi should work fine. For a long time I ran a Pi3 (running Raspbian and Plex) as a server and didn’t have any issues as long as media wasn’t encoded with h265. I had a few hard drives attached with different media on them. I used winscp to transfer files from my windows computer to the server so I had a nice GUI to transfer things quickly. I wouldn’t suggest using the WiFi on the Pi, you’re going to get better output from ethernet especially if you want more than one stream. As for the remote streams I can tell you that a Pi is not going to be able to transcode anything you would want to watch. Overall this is a great way to get your feet wet and as long as you are aware of the limitations of any low power server I think you will be very happy!
Thanks a lot for your feedback !
Is a shame the limitation with the remote reproduction the most important thing for my now is provide the remote stream… well I will see the glass half full here, I will find other use for the PI
Thanks a lot again !!
Have a nice day
Hi! I have a fresh install of PMS on a Raspberry Pi 3 and mostly stream to the Plex app on a Sony PS4 within the same home network. 6 ft Cat5 cable from Pi to router and the same with PS4.
I am having major buffering issues despite the pi solely being used to host media via PMS. Most files are 1-2 Gig films or smaller for tv episodes in 1080p whenever available. Even smaller files or trailers have this issue. I could let it slide for a 25 Gig BluRay REMUX rip but these smaller files should not need transcoding. Is there a setting I should look at to get media to play without interruption?
Hi the plex media server was designed for a fairly powerful cpu/gpu which means on a Raspberry PI if the server decides that it needs to do any type of transcoding you will get a lot of buffering. That is likely your problem. here are the formats that your PS4 should accept. PS4 Supported file formats But I don’t know about the Plex player for PS4, it may not accept all those formats. Once you know what format you need your movies to be in, you need to take your files to a powerful computer and transcode them. After that hopefully they should play on the PS4 with no buffering.
