Rasplex as a SONOS substitute?

Hi,

Can anyone help with an idea...

Everyone probably knows about SONOS..  Well I can see no reason why Rasplex and Plex, couldnt be made to do the same thing with just a little bit of tweeking...

I use plex on a mac mini, as well as Rasplex behind the TV in the bedroom...  That along with my iPhone and iPad as players and controllers.  now from what I can see the only things needed to really make it an awsome configuration and similar but better than SONOS is as follows;

  • Ability to queue songs to a list (for a single player, group of players, or all players)
  • Ability to play to a single player, or group the players so the same song is streamed to the group or all players at the same time.
  • Maybe a lightweight verion of the software, that does not do the video element so its just music focused for PIs plugged into speakers.

Am I thinking a bit too simplisticlly to think that some or all of that is too difficult?

Kind regards

Jason

Playing music isn't exaaactly Plex's strong suite. I would imagine that there would be better options to put on the Raspberry Pi, unless you're very dedicated to building up a good music collection within Plex

Yeah, realise the main drive is video, but it is the remote handling that is so brilliant. Ie the ability to start operating a remote device but still maintains the thumbnail view to ‘tap to play’.

It really wouldn’t take a lot to add a couple of functions and presto…

You can get pure audio Airplay clients for the PI, it might be a better option if you just want to use for audio.

Alternatively get some airport expresses

If you want to create a multiroom audio with many Raspberry Pi, you have to use your Rasbperry Pi like a squeezebox with squeezeplug. You can create a squeezebox server on your raspberry Pi with squeezeplay but it's better to have your squeezebox server on your nas/pc and use raspberry Pi like a player with squeezeslave.

there is also many app for iphone/ipad/android

Squeezebox is what you need :

  • Ability to queue songs to a list (for a single player, group of players, or all players)
  • Ability to play to a single player, or group the players so the same song is streamed to the group or all players at the same time.
  • Maybe a lightweight verion of the software, that does not do the video element so its just music focused for PIs plugged into speakers.

I don't know if its possible to run Rasplex and an other service in a same time. There is maybe a solution here

Great ideas, but doesn’t anyone think it would be good to just have one app to do all this… The reason SONOS is so good is because it is wife proof…

AirPlay is ok but I don’t want to have my music on the ‘i’ devices, I want it playing from a central location. Could do that just with DNLA but the whole point it to have a single interface and single file source…

Plew will never do that you really want. Because its not their priority and there is other app doing what you want. And if maybe they decide to do things like that, i'm sure you will have to wait many years..

euh? did you really search about Squeezebox ? You don"t have to get your music on each device. Just one nas/pc with Logitech media server on it. The other "player" (iphone/ipad/android/Raspberry Pi...etc) are just stream the source file from the server.

and Logitech Media Server on your server.

Ok, so I have shoehorned a Rasp Pi into a second hand iPod Dock and got myself a Squeezebox Slave. Still think a plex front end would be good for remote, but it does the job I guess.

Jason, I fully agree with you.

I have been looking for a Sonos substitute for a long time now and still there is no decent other solution.

Personally I am most interested in the SONOS connect to connect my current amps and boxes, but it costs 350 euros.

A Raspberry Pi + DAC (+/-100-120 euros) would be the ideal hardware to do this. Ofcourse you will still loose the meshgrid + separate internal network of sonos.

In my oppinion it is a huge potential and future growth for plex to focus more on audio to.

At this moment audio in plex is really subpar and limited, but that doesn't mean there is huge potential.

My eyes opened with chromecast support. The future is controlling everything through your smartphones and tablets.

I would love to be able to connect all my devices (tv's, amps and boxes) with a Rasberry Pi (or chromecast, or...) and control it through one media system (Preferable PLEX :) ).

I really hope the guys from PLEX are listening and improve the audio experience.

I'm using a pi with musicbox for this http://www.woutervanwijk.nl/pimusicbox/

I dont know if I would say its as good as sonos but it works for me.
