RasPlex cases

I'd have one, did I see the possibility to by a complete rasplex device?

A complete RasPlex device is a long way off, as we simply don't have the resources to spend 30-40 dollars per unit on the board. For the time being, the Pi's will be sold separately : (

Unless the cases really take off...

However, my hope is to get the case into the same online stores that already sell Pi', and offer it as a bundle that just pops together.

great case idea! is there going to be a slot to fit a gpio cable in?  that would be the decideing point for me.  i use my pi as a media center and for programming and such!  all the features i wanted in a case though! will there be east access to the sd card also? i switch mine out a bit...  and will it have a reset button? or could u add one.  it would be a rev2 only button cause it could just go to the reset pins on the pi.

Reset pins you say?

Tell me more!!!

well its a hard reset pin that resets the bcm SoC. theres 2 solder points near the micro usb that u can add a header too and when they are contacts it hard resets the pi.  this is not the best way to reset the pi if its responding but if it froze it would work and plus if it froze that the only time you would have to force reset it.

also another question.... will the on/off switch be just a toggle or will it be a tact momentary? (and will it just turn power off or shutdown pi then cut power)

I like it, but I would also like to see an access port for the GPIO. Instead of a cable slot, how about a 26 pin GPIO extender that has a 90 degree bend so it is ported on the side of the case?

Looking forward to this.

Thanks.

Bruce

I like the concept.  Could you embed a 3D walkaround for the product into your website?  It would be nice to get a look at all angles.  As of now, it looks like (even tho it isn't) the render has a perspective issue (trapezoid looking).  The reset button suggested by atvdude is a novel one, albeit sounds like it needs some soldering for it to work.  What I might do to it if I bought one is:

1.)  Replace the power button with a momentary switch,  connect it to the GPIO, and initiate a graceful shutdown or standby mode.  This would allow for Wake On Lan i hope (going to test tonight actually).  Haven't purchased an IR reciever yet, but I want to try and get the RPi to boot via power button on remote if it is in standby/shutdown.

2.)  Add a slot or two on top for the upcoming cameras to attempt Xbox-like hand gestures.  Would be theoretically easy via stereo cameras and an IR/laser for distance.

3.)  +1 for the 90 degree GPIO adapter/ribbon cable port.

4.) Ventilzation holes (even tho it doesn't get too warm to begin with)

I'd buy one and tinker with it.

I say keep it alpha as long as possible to prevent people that think they are entitled by some divine presence that this work flawlessly after a couple months

On your site you say the CAD models will be available for your case. Do you have any models available now? I am a Mechanical Engineer and I would not mind looking at them and giving some feedback. I cant code C++, but I may be able to help with the case.

for #1 id do same but i would want it to cut power too... completely take all power away would be best.

for #2 great idea

for #3 sounds like a great idea also!

for #4 it can get a bit warm with cpu intensize such though the heatsinks i use work well. i think vent holes in a design would look nice.

also soldering a small header on pi is nothing if you have soldered before. i used leaded solder and some breakaway header i had laying around though rev1 pi's wont work for reset though they could still tech be hooked up to a gpio to initiate a reboot.

as we are all talking about additions.... isnt the price going up with each addition? i think the case needs to be as nice as possible but stay under a $25 dollar price point. and cheaper if possible so more people buy it....

Great ideas, I'll put the 3D image up once we are done with this batch of prototyping.

Yes, the idea is to keep it simple and modular.

Thanks for your interest, i'll get the STLs up asap

When can I order? Need 3 cases

where are the stl files going to be? Or are they already up somewhere?

You might find it to be cost effective to build to order for this. Ensure that it's known to the buyer that it takes extra time to secure the Pi.

If you were to do a package where I could purchase the case, PI and have the latest RASPLEX build on it ready to go but it takes say 8 working days from order to ship PLUS a couple of days for it to route through the postage service I'd be very interested.

YES I'm a very lazy man.

Dale, I'd certainly be willing to help test a prototype version for you.  If you need any help, of course!   ;)

Right now we are working on the supply chain - we need to get a mold made. The only prototypes we have now are 3D printed and too expensive /slow to produce.

Please be patient, we will have a kickstarter up soon (to fund the die cast molding) which will be the easiest way to order a case, but we want to make sure our prototype is absolutely perfect before we do this.

what features are on the prototype right now? original description or did u add some of our suggestions? main things im wondering is.....

will there be a slot for gpio?

will the sd card be accessed easily?

will u have slots for the camera and display ports?

Another +1 from me.

Let us know when the kickstarter campaign is live!

You certainly have a backer here.
