Rasplex with ddclient

I just installed rasplex on my brand new raspberry pi 2. Pretty awesome. The reason I bought the pi, however was to use it as a dyndns updater. I have a system of cameras at my cabin that I need to be able to log in to see, and they ip address is constantly updated. I figured, hey, why not also have plex up there while I’m at it. That’d be awesome.

While I can ssh in, as we all know, there’s no package manager which wouldn’t work anyway given that we can’t right to the system. So, I’m guessing I have to build a custom image with ddclient already built in. I can follow instructions pretty easily, but I wouldn’t know where to start with this. I’d love to have it be one of the services that can be configured in the rasplex settings.

Unfortunately for me, ddclient is the need, and plex is the want, so if it comes down to it, I lose plex. I’d rather not lose plex. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure you cannot get static ip for your devices or DHCP ip reservation from your router? Most routers offer that.

It’s not the devices that are the issue. The devices can have a static IP address, yes but it is the router that has a dynamic IP and I cannot get a static ip from the ISP.

This is for my cabin and I need to be able to access it from my home so ddclient to the rescue.

You will not be able to get this running without a knowledge of Linux and have reasonable build experience.

The source is on GitHub if you feel brave enough to have a go, but the source is only at 0.4.1, which represents the last stable build.

Why not get another RPi for the cabin to use for your dyndns updated, cost is minimal.

Or another alternative, If your router supports it, check if you can install dd-wrt firmware then you can do DDNS straight from the router.

I first looked into dd-wrt, but the routers I have do not have builds for it. Buying another RPi is of course an option, and might even be one I’d pick if I NEEDed plex. It was more of a “hey, I have this hardware. Let’s make it do 2 things instead of 1”. I already have other ways of watching plex from the cabin, I just thought it would be nice to consolidate hardware.
