I ask because the TV Series scanner is exceedingly stupid and/or broken.
I have several Slayers series in an "anime": (Slayers, Slayers Evolution-R, Slayers Next, Slayers Revolution and Slayers Try)
The problem? After I do a scan (like delete collection and re-add level of scan) everything in slayers gets screwed up.
I end up with only two series: Slayers and Slayers Evolution-R where the Slayers category contains an annoying mix of both Revolution (1-13) and The original Slayers. (14-26) Next and Try end up completely missing.
All in all for Anime I think i'd much prefer just a list of the stuff as it is in the directories so I can play whatever's there myself.
if you using it for anime i suggest looking into installing one of the third party custom scanners/agents made for anime which are usually aware of the absolute numbering that anime folks tend to like ( which the tvdb which plex gets stuff from does not use). there are scanner and agent sections of the forums that you can find them in

Care to be more specific? I see one or two other scanners but none seems to apply here.
Ah hah! Finally got it working through a combination of that and the "Personal Media Shows" agent. I think part of the problem is thetvdb doesn't have entries for anything past the original slayers so it was getting a bit confused.
Expanding on the original post, is there a plan or an existing extension/scanner/... to just list files in a directory and play them if possible?
I ask because if have a MISC folder on my NAS where I put documentaries, single episodes from tv shows or recordings that I don't need in my library, but it would be great to be able to play them directly in plex without having to exit out of plex into mplayer.
These files most of the time will be watched once and the deleted, so I don't need them to clutter my library.
Plex Eight had this iirc, has this been replaced or completely cut?

Given that it was rather explicitly stated above that this doesn't exist i'd hazard a guess at "no".
You could probably fake it by making a separate folder, use the "movies" scanner and the agent to Personal Media. Just did a test with a couple files and they showed up as is without any issues.
FnordMan is correct there is no plans to do so. everything in plex is database driven so it must be read in. Using a Movie library and changing the scanner to Personal Media (Which is the same as making a Home Movies library) it will not get metadata and is the recommended way of just having a general folder of stuff
