Recently Upgraded From Firestick To Nvidia Shield

My Firestick was slow and laggy so finally bit the bullet and bought the new shield.
I’ve been using my MacBook as my server with my library on an external hard drive.
Is it as simple as plugging my external into the shield to use Plex on the shield? I’ve seen a few videos supposedly showing how to and they all seem to need to format the drive? losing all my data? Surely not?
Basically wanting to use the shield as the main server but still be able to use Mac too, for updating files, cover art etc

That… sounds wrong.
Here you go with some more solid information

When i first started plex it said it found my macbook server, none of the initial setup options came up.
Only way i can play video is to use my macbook server.

from the 1st link above:

Enabling or Disabling Plex Media Server

If you decide that you no longer wish to run Plex Media Server on the NVIDIA SHIELD (or it was previously disabled and you want to re-enable it), you can do so at any time by launching the regular Plex client app on the SHIELD.

  1. Open the regular Plex app
  2. Go to Settings > Plex Media Server
  3. The first item in row list the server version number shows if it is running or stopped
  4. Select that item then toggle off or on

Yep, that’s running.

Also, no sign of Shield on the Plex Web App

Try to access it via the IP of the Shield: https://[SHIELD IP]:32400/web

still can’t find it.

Is it signed in with your account?
Otherwise try this:

  1. disable the server on the Shield
  2. logout on the device
  3. restart the client
  4. sign in again
  5. re-enable the server
  6. try to access it with the local IP again

The IP address is massive, 3 or 4 lines long, must be due to wifi connection?

IP addresses are always structured the same way…

  • IP v4: 4 sections of numbers ranging from 0-255 (00-FF)
  • IP v6: 8 sections of “4-digit” hex-numbers (0000-FFFF)

If it’s 3-4 lines long, it’s likely not an IP address

Ok… that’s 4 separate IPv6 addresses.
You should be able to confirm the device’s IP address from your router (e.g. a list of connected devices)

the IP address assigned to my shield on my router is an IPv4 while the one that shows up on the shield is the one in the pic i sent?
